Dehradun police arrest wanted criminal with history of cow-slaughter
Case Summary
On November 2, Dehradun police arrested Yusuf, a wanted criminal with a ₹10,000 bounty, in an encounter linked to cow slaughter crimes. Yusuf, accused under the Uttarakhand Gau Vansh Sanrakshan Act, 2007, had been evading arrest and is believed to have a history of involvement in cow slaughter. The incident unfolded when Yusuf, on a motorcycle, fired at police during a routine check at Singhni Wala and fled towards Sahaspur. Alerted police teams tracked him to Sherpur, where a second confrontation occurred, resulting in Yusuf being injured by a police bullet. He was taken to Sahaspur Government Hospital for treatment. According to SSP Ajay Singh, Yusuf, a resident of Shikohpur, Haridwar, was wanted under FIR No. 158/2024 registered at Premnagar police station. Sufficient evidence linked Yusuf to long-standing cow slaughter activities.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
