Over 100 cows meant for slaughter recovered, cattle smugglers shoot at cops and flee
Case Summary
On November 3, an encounter occurred between cow smugglers and the Quick Response Team (QRT) in the Bayana Sadar area of Bharatpur, Rajasthan. The smugglers fired five rounds at the police, who responded with two rounds. Taking advantage of the darkness, the smugglers fled, abandoning a truck containing 22 cows and leaving another 100 cattle in a nearby forest. The livestock was reportedly being prepared for transport to a slaughterhouse. Police, along with members of the Gau Raksha Dal, conducted a search operation but failed to apprehend the smugglers. The rescued cattle were sent to local shelters, including Ikran Gaushala and Shri Krishna Gaushala. Despite the incident, no FIR had been registered 12 hours later. Authorities planned to file a case under the Cow Protection Act and for obstructing government work. Bayana Additional Superintendent of Police Hariram Kumawat confirmed the involvement of multiple police teams and highlighted the smugglers’ strategy of gathering 100–150 cattle in the dense forest before transport.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
