Hindu temple attacked at night, idols of Goddess Durga and others vandalised in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh
Case Summary
In Kishoreganj, miscreants carried out an attack late at night on a temple, vandalising several idols, including that of Goddess Durga. The incident occurred at the Shri Shri Gopinath Jiu Akhra temple in the Batrish area of the district town. According to the temple committee, members of the Puja Celebration Committee had stayed overnight in the temple on Wednesday. On Thursday morning, when they woke up, they found that the idols had been vandalised. The matter was then reported to the temple committee president, who informed the police. Later in the morning, District Superintendent of Police Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury visited the site. Rajib Das, Organising Secretary of the Gopinath Sangha, said: “We demand justice for the culprits. Those who are destroying communal harmony must be identified.” Sudipta Pandit (Shubho), Joint General Secretary of the Municipal Puja Celebration Council, said: “We seek resolution of the matter from the local administration. We believe that with proper investigation, the perpetrators will be brought under the law.” Sajib Saha, General Secretary of Shri Gopinath Jiu Akhra temple, said that the Sanatan Dharma community has been living in fear since the incident. Liton Sarkar, President of Shri Gopinath Jiu Akhra temple, said that the miscreants committed the crime at some point during the night. He demanded that those destroying communal harmony be identified and punished. Confirming the matter, Kishoreganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Tariqul Islam said, “A case is being processed. The perpetrators will not be spared.” The incident occurred amid heightened chaos following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5, 2024. The political instability allowed Islamist extremists to escalate violence against the Hindu community. Hindu homes were attacked and burned, women were abducted, and several temples in the region were destroyed. The arrest of three Hindu priests further intensified tensions, prompting protests by Hindu minorities across Bangladesh. Protestors demanded justice and protection in the face of increasing violence and anarchy. The situation highlighted the worsening plight of Hindus under the new Islamist regime, led by Muhammad Yunus, as attacks on their communities continued unabated.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. The sub-category relevant in this case is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbols. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other sub-category relevant in this case is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The destruction of multiple idols, including that of Goddess Durga, inside the temple is a clear example of the desecration of Hindu religious symbols. In Hindu Dharma, Murtis are not inanimate objects but divine manifestations that embody the presence of the deity. Daily worship, offerings, and rituals revolve around these sacred images, making them central to the spiritual life of Hindus. By deliberately vandalising the Murtis, the perpetrators directly targeted the spiritual heart of Hindu devotion. Such acts cannot be dismissed as random vandalism; rather, they reflect hostility towards the Hindu faith itself. The intention behind breaking the sacred idols was to insult, demean, and create fear among Hindus, which is why this desecration falls under the category of a religiously motivated hate crime. It also represents an attack on a sacred Hindu space. In Hindu belief, a temple is more than a physical structure—it is the abode of the deity, consecrated and infused with divine energy. The temple premises are thus revered as holy ground by the community. An attack on a temple is not merely an attack on property; it is an attack on the living presence of the deity and, by extension, the Hindu faith itself. In Kishoreganj, the deliberate targeting of the temple during a time of worship was meant to disrupt Hindu religious practice, instil fear in the community, and send a message of hostility towards the faith. This makes the incident a religiously motivated hate crime. These kinds of attacks are not isolated but are part of a recurring pattern of religious hostility towards Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. Time and again, Hindu religious sites and symbols have been destroyed and desecrated by members of the Muslim community. This stems from religious animosity that exists in Islam against idol worshippers like Hindus, as idol worship is forbidden in Islam. This results in Hindus being frequently targeted and attacked just for practising their own faith. These attacks on temples and temple idols are not just acts of vandalism; they are direct assaults on the religious identity of Hindus. It highlights an atmosphere of religious intolerance where Hindu minority communities live under constant threat to their faith and dignity.
