Hindu woman raped and blackmailed by Muslim man pretending to be Hindu

Case Summary
In Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh, a 23-year-old tribal woman accused a man, identified as Mohsin Multani, of raping and blackmailing her. The victim's ordeal began three years prior when a friend, Sunita Jamre, introduced her to Mohsin, who claimed to be a Hindu man named "Pradeep Solanki" from Kasrawad. The two became friends, and Mohsin gradually lured the woman into a relationship. At the time, the victim worked at a bakery and lived in a rented room, where Mohsin started visiting her regularly, sexually exploiting her by promising marriage. During this period, he secretly recorded several objectionable videos of her. When the victim eventually discovered Mohsin's true identity and learned that he was from the Manawar region of Dhar district, she began distancing herself from him. However, Mohsin responded by blackmailing her, threatening to release the videos unless she complied with his demands. He also threatened to harm her family. Despite multiple attempts to escape, Mohsin continued to blackmail her and extort money from her bakery earnings. The victim returned to her family’s home and disclosed the abuse. With the support of Hindu organisations, she approached the Kotwali Police Station and filed a complaint. The police filed a case based on her complaint, charging Mohsin with several offenses, including rape, violation of the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act 2021. Sunita Jamre, the woman who introduced the victim to Mohsin, was also booked in connection with the case. Local Hindu organisations rallied in support of the victim. Shiv Sena’s district president Raju Sharma and other members of the group visited the Khargone Police Station, demanding strict action against Mohsin.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The case has been added as a religiously motivated crime to the tracker under the prime category of- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The sub-category selected under this is- Man pretends to be Hindu. Further, based on details, a tertiary category called- Named changed, has also been selected here. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. Here, the Muslim perpetrator pretended to be a Hindu to befriend the Hindu victim. The act of assuming a false religious identity to deceive and manipulate someone into a relationship is inherently malicious. It undermines the victim's right to make informed decisions about their relationships, especially those that involve significant cultural and religious dimensions. This type of exploitation, particularly when it involves religious deception, highlights a profound disrespect for the victim's faith and autonomy. It is a deliberate and calculated attempt to exert control over her, using religion as a tool of manipulation and domination. Notably, in this case, though the accused also utilized the victim's private photos as a kind of blackmail so that the victim yields to the demands of the offender out of fear, the accused's deliberate concealment of his religious identity to specifically target a Hindu woman demonstrates that this was not a random act of violence. Instead, the crime is deeply rooted in religious intolerance, as the perpetrator aimed to exploit and harm the victim because of her Hindu faith. This targeted attack highlights how such crimes go beyond general violence, emphasizing the religious motivations behind them and this is why such cases deserve to be included in the tracker.
