Hindu girl abducted; mother of the victim accuses Muslim youth of kidnapping her daughter with the intention to convert her to Islam and perform Nikah

Case Summary
A Muslim youth, Insaf alias Raja, after being released on bail, abducted a Hindu girl to forcibly convert her religion and marry her. The victim's mother filed a complaint with the Superintendent of Police (SP), accusing the youth of abducting her daughter with the intention to convert her to Islam and perform Nikah with her. According to the victim's mother, in 2021, her minor daughter was abducted by Insaf alias Raja, a Muslim youth from the neighborhood. She had lodged an FIR at Jehanabad police station, and the police subsequently rescued her daughter, adding rape charges to the case and sending the accused to jail. However, after securing bail, the accused began pressuring the family for a settlement. To protect the victim, her family arranged her marriage in Kanpur. Despite this, the accused, Insaf Raja, continued to pursue her. He told the victim's in-laws about the earlier incident, after which she returned to live with her parents. On November 25, 2024, the accused abducted her again, intending to convert her religion and force her into marriage. The victim's mother initially approached Jehanabad police station but claimed no action was taken. She then escalated the matter to SP Dhawal Jaiswal. The SP confirmed that the case is under investigation. The accused has been taken into custody for questioning, and the victim, now an adult, will provide her statement before further action is taken.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category of- Predatory proselytisation. Under this, the sub-category selected is- Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. In this subcategory, we would only include cases where the victim was harassed, threatened or coerced to convert. Cases where attempts were made to convert but the victim resisted would be documented in another sub-category. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. This case reflects the deliberate and targeted attempts to manipulate or coerce an individual into religious conversion through deceptive or exploitative means. The Muslim accused here not only abducted the victim multiple times but also used threats and coercion to forcibly convert her religion and compel her into marriage. This persistent pressure, combined with the illegal nature of the actions, represents a clear pattern of exploitation with the intent to manipulate the victim's religious identity. Since violence was employed with the sole aim of disenfranchising the victim from her faith—which itself is a product of hostility towards the Hindu faith— this case has been included in the database.
