Attack on Hindu temple on the day of Muharram, protesting Hindus dragged by police
Case Summary
An incident of stone pelting at a Kali Mandir in Bihar's Bhagalpur district came to the fore. On July 30, 2023, the day the Islamic festival Muharram was observed, some people of the Muslim community pelted stones as their tazia procession passed through the Kali Mandir. Some parts of the temple were damaged in the stone pelting incident. Kameshwar Singh of Kali Maharani Puja Committee, while talking to the media, held the people of the Muslim community responsible for the attack on the temple. He said that the temple was damaged by the people participating in the tazia procession.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, the Muslims pelted stones at a Hindu shrine which is a clear disdain for the Hindu faith and for that reason, this case has been added to the hate tracker.
