Hindu temple premise illegally occupied, devotees threatened by encroacher in Madhya Pradesh
Case Summary
In Badnapur, in the Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh, a Hindu temple premise had been illegally encroached upon by a local resident from the village. According to media reports, the incident came to light on 10th October 2025, when a delegation of Hindu villagers reached the Forest Department office in Nepanagar to submit a complaint regarding renewed encroachment on the temple premises located in the forest area of Badnapur. The villagers submitted a written complaint to Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Vikram Sulia and in-charge Ranger, Trainee Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Ajay Gupta. The officials assured the villagers that an on-site investigation would be conducted. Villager Nitin Patel, a Hindu man, stated that a resident of the village had previously encroached on the temple land, which was removed on 7th March 2024 in the presence of the administration and the forest department, as directed by a court order. However, the same individual again occupied the temple premises on 10th July 2025. The villagers stated that the encroacher had also been issuing threats to them. They demanded that the encroachment be removed immediately and that the temple premises be restored to their original condition. Forest SDO Vikram Sulia confirmed that a complaint regarding encroachment on the temple premises had been received. He stated that a team would soon visit the site for investigation, and based on the findings, appropriate legal action would be taken.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Encroachment or illicit takeover of temple land/ land near temple. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Not only the Temple but the Temple premises in its entirety are considered sacred by Hindus. In several cases, the premises of the Temple and/or religious centre are illicitly taken over by institutions belonging to other faiths – like the Waqf board or the Church. Other times, the temple property, land or the property of religious centres are illicitly encroached by non-Hindu groups. Any illicit take over or encroachment is a crime an initio, however, when non-Hindu groups illicitly take over or encroach the sacred land of Hindus, it is an affront to the Hindu community and is therefore classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. In this case, it is important to state that for Hindus, temples are not merely structures of worship but sacred institutions embodying the living presence of the Divine. A Hindu temple is revered as the abode of the deity, and the idol within is considered a physical manifestation of that deity. Every part of the temple—from its sanctum to its outer premises and the land surrounding it—is consecrated ground, symbolising purity, devotion, and spiritual heritage. The temple, therefore, holds immense emotional and religious significance for the Hindu community, forming the very heart of their collective faith and daily worship. In this context, the illegal encroachment upon the temple premises in Badnapur, Burhanpur district, by the accused—fully aware of its sanctity—was a grave act of disrespect towards Hindu sentiments. It reflected a deliberate attempt to undermine the Hindu faith and to hurt the religious feelings of the community. Such actions not only cause deep distress among devotees but also instil fear and insecurity. This conscious violation of a sacred space constitutes a deliberate attempt to hurt religious sentiments and is clearly a religiously motivated act. When acts such as these are committed, they disrupt the spiritual lives of Hindus by preventing them from performing their daily rituals and prayers with the required purity and peace. Villagers expressed that this encroachment caused immense trouble to devotees, as the regular conduct of worship and prayers was hindered. Temples, by their very nature, require an atmosphere of purity, respect, and serenity for proper worship. Any interference with these practices causes more than a physical obstruction—it inflicts emotional anguish and spiritual distress. The villagers also revealed that the accused not only encroached upon the temple premises but had also issued threats to them. This further reinforces the religiously motivated nature of the crime. First, the offender disrespected the Hindu faith by seizing the temple premises, and then he threatened the very devotees who sought to protect their place of worship. Such intimidation instils fear among Hindus, discouraging them from visiting their sacred temple and practising their faith freely. This layered aggression amounts unmistakably to a religiously motivated hate crime. This incident was not the first instance of encroachment by the same individual. Earlier, on 7 March 2024, the same person had illegally occupied the temple land, which was later freed in the presence of administrative and forest department officials following a court directive. The repetition of such deliberate actions—first in 2024 and later in 2025—shows a persistent pattern of targeting a Hindu temple with the clear intent to disrespect and dispossess the community of its sacred space. This repeated aggression demonstrates an ongoing attempt to desecrate a symbol of Hindu faith, making it a targeted and systematic act of religious animosity. Although the precise identity of the perpetrator remains unspecified in available media reports, the nature of the act—selective targeting of a Hindu temple, repeated encroachment, and intimidation of Hindu devotees—clearly establishes its communal and religiously motivated character. This incident exemplifies a hate crime directed against Hindus and their places of worship. Accordingly, this case is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
