Jaunpur's auto driver Sajjad holds married Dalit passenger hostage after drugging her, repeatedly rapes her
Case Summary
On March 19, in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur region, a married Dalit woman was drugged and sexually violated by autorickshaw driver Sajjad (or Sabir), who also held her hostage for five days. The police arrested the accused on April 3. The victim's husband, who works in Mumbai, was away, while her brother-in-law and his wife were visiting their village. They needed to catch a train from Varanasi Junction on March 19, so the victim arranged for Sajjad's autorickshaw. While returning from the station, Sajjad stopped the vehicle under the guise of having tea in the Babatpur region, drugged the woman's beverage, and took her to a room when she lost consciousness. With threats of killing her child when she showed resistance, Sajjad sexually assaulted her. The victim was held captive for five days during which she was raped multiple times. Her family members submitted a missing person report at the Jaunpur police station. Sajjad, sensing trouble, released the woman on 24 March. She hurried back home and recounted the incident to her family, who demanded severe consequences for the perpetrator. About 15 days later, the Sureri police station filed an FIR and arrested Sajjad.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
Rape is often used as a tool for religious subjugation. There have been several cases where a non-Hindu perpetrator raped a Hindu woman out of animosity and disdain for the victim's religious identity. Rape has been used as a tool for religious subjugation has been used historically, evidenced by the fact that several Hindu queens committed Jauhar to escape the sexual tyranny of Muslim invaders. There have been several contemporary cases too where it Hindu women were subjected to horrific rape and the hate that drove the crime was clearly religious in nature. For example, a case from Kausambhi where the rapists asked the victim to beg for mercy in the name of Allah and not Bhagwan. In this case, the crime could have been perpetrated owing to religious animosity, however, since there is no evident indication of a religious motive, it is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more information emerges, it will be added to the hate crime database.
