Case Summary

In Salon, Uttar Pradesh, the severed head of a cow was discovered. Near the Salon block, passers-by discovered the severed head of a cow. Upon receiving the information, members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and the Gau Raksha Hindu Yuva Vahini arrived at the spot. The organisations submitted a written complaint at the Salon police station. They stated that some miscreants had killed the cow and were involved in trafficking its meat. The groups have demanded that the Station House Officer investigate the matter and register a case. They emphasised that such incidents deeply hurt Hindu sentiments and must not be repeated. Present at the scene were activists including Sanjay Tiwari, Rohit Dwivedi, Suresh Singh, Mahendra Sharma, Shivam Shukla, and Anurag Pandey, among others.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it will be added to the Hate Crime Database.
