Muslim gang involved in cattle smuggling busted in Jaunpur

Case Summary
In Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district, a Muslim gang involved in cattle smuggling was busted by police. Police arrested a few smugglers, while others remained at large. According to the Shahganj police station, at around 10 p.m., during a routine check at the Jamdanipur-Deedarganj border, a motorcyclist was signalled to stop. Instead of stopping, he tried to flee. While being chased, the accused fell off the motorcycle and opened fire on the police. In retaliation, the police also fired, during which Shadab was shot in the leg. After receiving first aid at the Primary Health Centre in Khetasarai, Shadab was referred to the district hospital in Jaunpur. During police interrogation, Shadab confessed that he, along with his accomplices, was involved in cattle smuggling and sold beef after capturing the animals. Based on his statement, the police arrested his wife, Rubana, from their house in Jamdanipur, where 50 kilograms of beef was also recovered. Other accomplices—Naushad, Pappu, Dilshad, and Irshad— are still at large. Under the direction of the Superintendent of Police, the team involved in the operation included Station Officer Dipendra Singh, Sub-Inspector Syed Hasan Jafar Rizvi, Sub-Inspector Chandrabhan Yadav, and other police personnel. Considering the seriousness of the case, the police were conducting raids to arrest the absconding accused and also investigating the gang’s network. This operation was carried out as part of the ongoing crackdown on crime and cattle smuggling, for which strict directives had already been issued.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as Undecided. If more details emerge, it will be added to the Hate Crime Database.
