Case Summary
In the Baramudi area of Dhanbad, Jharkhand, a 19-year-old Hindu woman was lured away by a 45-year-old Muslim man named Arif Hussain alias Arif Khan. The victim was also lured into taking away Rs 50,000 in cash and jewellery worth Rs 2,00,000 from her home. According to a media report by Dainik Bhaskar, Arif came in contact with the woman in the guise of giving her a job. The victim was lured by the accused to elope with him along with Rs 50,000 cash and jewellery worth Rs 2 lakhs. The accused, Arif, resident of Putki, is already married and has children, among whom the elder daughter is 18 years old. Soon after the Hindu woman went missing, the victim's mother filed a police complaint against Arif, accusing him of luring away her daughter along with money and jewellery. On 2nd May 2025, a few locals got the information that Arif had visited the local court to file an affidavit. Soon after this, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad district president Dwarika Tiwari, metropolitan vice-president Pappu Yadav, Diwakar Singh and Bajrang Dal's Govind Shukla reached the court. But before they could catch the accused, he managed to flee. Following this, VHP and Bajrang Dal workers reached the police station and protested. They demanded the recovery of the girl and the arrest of the accused. They also said that if the girl was not recovered, then they would protest. The police station in charge assured to safely recover the victim. According to Dwarika Prasad Tiwari of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Arif worked in network marketing. He came in contact with the girl in the guise of providing her a job. Following this, he lured away the woman along with the money and jewellery. In a short video uploaded by Dainik Bhaskar in their news report, Dwarika Prasad Mishra also said that many groups of Muslims in Dhanbad were actively working in luring away Hindu women with an underlying agenda of religious conversion and exploitation.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a Hindu woman was lured by a Muslim man. This case potentially reflects religious targeting, as multiple past instances have demonstrated a recurring pattern in which Muslim perpetrators have targeted Hindu women through coercion, deception, or force, often with the intention of conversion. Hindu women are the most vulnerable to crimes such as abduction, forced conversion, and rape at the hands of Muslim men. However, here the victim is an adult and possesses full legal autonomy and the capacity to provide informed consent to elope with whomever she chooses. It is also important to note that the victim has not issued any statement regarding this matter. In the absence of her testimony or any other concrete evidence, such as proof of coercion, force, or religious targeting, the case will remain in the ‘Undecided’ category. It may be reclassified if future details substantiate a clear hate crime or religiously motivated offence. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the woman was lured away by the Muslim man. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when the incident was reported in the media.
