Case Summary

In Sohna, Haryana, a Hindu girl was deceived by a Muslim man who pretended to be Hindu. He threatened and blackmailed her into meeting him, during which he behaved in an obscene manner. Members of Hindu organisations, along with the police, conducted raids on hotels and found multiple Hindu girls with Muslim men. One of the Hindu girls filed a formal police complaint against a Muslim man for blackmailing and threatening her. According to her statement, the Muslim youth had initially befriended her on Instagram using a fake Hindu identity, introducing himself as "Rahul." Over time, the two developed a connection through online conversations, following which he persuaded her to meet him in a hotel in Sohna. The girl, a resident of Mathura, arrived under pressure and fear, as the Muslim man had threatened to make her private photos viral if she refused. She further stated that he behaved obscenely at the hotel and reiterated the threat when she resisted. When the hotel was raided by the police and Hindu activists, the youth’s true identity was revealed. He was identified as Shahid Mohammad, a resident of Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. As of the date of writing this report, Shahid Mohammad was arrested by the police, and the investigation was ongoing.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected is: - Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being: - Name changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. This case is a clear instance of a religiously motivated hate crime, as the perpetrator deliberately concealed his religious identity to deceive a Hindu woman, making her religion the basis for targeting her. By falsely presenting himself as “Rahul”, he sought to overcome the social and cultural barriers that might have otherwise led to immediate rejection. Through sustained deception, he built a relationship under false pretences, gaining the girl's trust before resorting to blackmail by threatening to leak her intimate photos if she refused to meet him. Under duress, the girl agreed to meet him at a hotel, where he behaved in a sexually inappropriate and coercive manner. This sequence of actions suggests that the Muslim man was never interested in a genuine relationship; rather, his intent was sexual exploitation of a Hindu girl by manipulating her through religious misrepresentation. By misrepresenting himself and engaging in blackmail and sexual misconduct, the perpetrator exploited the woman’s religious background as a tool for manipulation. The perpetrator’s actions were motivated by prejudice against the woman’s religious identity. By intentionally deceiving her and exploiting her faith as a means to manipulate her, he demonstrated clear hostility rooted in religious bias. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal. It can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs, and this is why this case has been added here. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the woman's ordeal began, but it mentions that the victim met the accused on 6th May 2025. Since this is the earliest date mentioned, we are considering this as when the victim's ordeal began and using this as the incident date.
