Hindu girl trapped, raped and impregnated by a Muslim man on pretext of marriage

Case Summary
In Bhanupratappur town of Kanker district, Chhattisgarh, a Hindu girl was raped and impregnated thrice by a Muslim man under the pretext of marriage. The accused, identified as Aslam Khan, was the operator of Roohani Cafe and Rukhsar Crane in the locality. The Muslim man had hired a Hindu girl to work in his cafe and kept raping her continuously by luring her with the promise of marriage. When the girl became pregnant, the accused forced her to abort the child twice. When the girl became pregnant for the third time, the accused again started pressuring her to get an abortion and refused to marry her. It was later revealed that the accused was already married. Following public outcry and pressure from the local Hindu organisation, a large number of people gathered at the Bhanupratappur police station and demanded immediate action. Responding to the situation, the police arrested Aslam Khan and initiated a formal investigation into the matter.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case involves serious criminal conduct—rape, deception, and coercion—but presents certain complexities that make it difficult to conclusively categorise it as a religiously motivated hate crime, despite clear indications that the victim, a Hindu girl, may have been targeted because of her religious identity. The modus operandi fits a broader and well-documented pattern wherein Hindu women are exploited by Muslim men through emotional manipulation, false promises of marriage, and, in some cases, forced abortions—all tactics often associated with predatory proselytisation. In this instance, the accused, Aslam Khan, hired the victim, lured her into a relationship under false pretenses, raped her repeatedly, and compelled her to undergo abortions—all while concealing the fact that he was already married. It is also not clear whether the woman was a minor or an adult. If she was an adult, she has the agency to make decisions about maintaining a relationship, consenting to marriage, and even changing her religion. However, the use of deception, repeated exploitation, and coerced abortions complicates any notion of informed consent or autonomy in this context. While the victim's Hindu identity and vulnerable socio-economic position may have made her an easy target, the current evidence does not explicitly point to forced religious conversion or proselytisation as the primary motive. The repeated exploitation and deceit do suggest a pattern of abuse that may be underpinned by hostility or disregard for the victim’s faith, but this remains circumstantial without direct proof of religious intent. As such, this case is placed in the "undecided" category. It highlights a disturbing pattern that warrants deeper scrutiny, especially in light of similar cases, but lacks the conclusive evidence required to definitively classify it as a religiously motivated hate crime. Should further investigation reveal attempts at conversion, affiliations with networks involved in targeting Hindu women, or ideological motivations rooted in religious hostility, the case could be reclassified accordingly.
