Hindu woman raped and threatened with ‘Pahalgam-like’ violence for refusing to convert

Case Summary
In Indore, a 27-year-old Muslim man named Jibrail sexually assaulted a Hindu woman teacher and attempted to coerce her into religious conversion. He threatened her with a Pahalgam-like fate, where Islamic terrorists brutally killed Hindu tourists after checking their religious identity, if she did not accede to his conversion demands. The survivor registered a formal complaint at the Lasudiya police station. The woman met Jibrail, a hardware businessman in Rajgarh, in 2017. At that time, her father's health was not good. Jibrail, who made her believe he was like her brother, offered to help. He started coming to her home under the pretext of helping her. In 2018, he took her to a hotel in Rajgarh, and raped her and recorded obscene videos. After that, Jibrail blackmailed her to convert. He ridiculed her by calling her his mistress. After her father's death, the woman with her family shifted to Indore. Jibrail followed her. She reported that Jibrail came to her home in Indore and issued death threats and physically assaulted her, warning that harm would come to her family if she did not comply with his demands. He referred to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, where 24 Hindu tourists were killed and 16 were left gravely injured, and threatened her with a similar fate if she did not accede to his demands. The complaint described a pattern of escalating aggression. Jibrail forced his way into her home, assaulted both her and her mother, and used obscene language. He later confronted her near a hospital, threatened to sabotage her engagement, and forcibly placed a gold chain around her neck while declaring her to be his mistress. Despite her refusal, he continued to pressure her with material promises. When she resisted, his behaviour turned even more threatening, with warnings of severe consequences. According to the woman, Jibrail took her to a hotel at knifepoint and raped her. Before leaving, he warned that if she stopped communicating with him, she and her family would face serious consequences. She reported multiple instances of rape. Having lost her father, she had been living in Indore since 2020. Jibrail, who was already married and had four children, also threatened to release private photographs and videos of her on social media. After she got engaged, he followed her to Indore, took her to a jewellery store, and tried to bribe her into calling off the engagement.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case is categorised under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Under that, the relevant sub-category is- Rape for refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change her religious identity by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressuring the Hindu woman to convert. In some of these cases, the association could be non-consensual as well or, the religious identity of the non-Muslim man could be previously unknown to the Hindu victim. As the case may be, in such cases, the non-Hindu man forces himself sexually on the Hindu woman when she refuses his advances and pressures to convert her religion. The rape of the woman is often seen as either a punishment for the woman refusing to convert. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The other sub-category selected is- Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. The other sub-category selected is- Torture of family to force woman to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is forced to convert her religion. Several methods are used for such forced conversion. The non-Hindu man is often documented to issue threats and even employ violence. One of the ways used by such perpetrators is threatening and/or torturing the family members of the Hindu woman to pressure her to convert. The perpetrators in such cases issue threats to harm or torture the family of the woman. In some cases, there is also violence directed towards the family to force the Hindu woman to convert. Such crimes aim to blackmail the victim into changing her religion by inducing fear of harm to her family. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The other sub-category selected is- Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The other primary selected is- Hate Speech against Hindus. Under that, the relevant sub-category is- Violent threats. Violent threats, explicit, implicit or implied, is the most dangerous form of hate speech since it goes beyond discriminatory and prejudicial language to express the intent of causing harm to an individual or a group of people based on their religious identity and faith. There could be several different kinds of threats that are issued to Hindus based on religious animosity. An explicit threat would mean the direct threat of violence towards an individual Hindu, a group of Hindus or Hindus at large. Physical violence, death threats, threats of destruction of property belonging to Hindus and threats of genocide would mean explicit threats against Hindus for their religious identity. Implicit threats may not be a direct threat but implied through the use of symbols of actions – for example – in the Nupur Sharma case, other than explicit threats, there were also implicit threats when Islamists took to the streets to burn and beat her effigies. It implies that they want to do the same to Nupur Sharma – thereby is considered an implicit threat. Violent threats can be delivered in person, through letters, phone calls, graffiti, or increasingly through social media and other online platforms. It would be important to understand that a threat – explicit or implicit, online or offline – to an individual who happens to be a Hindu does not qualify as a religiously motivated threat. Such a threat, while vile and dangerous, could be owing to non-religious reasons and/or personal animosity. To qualify as a religiously motivated threat, it would need to exhibit an indication that the individual is being targeted for religious reasons and/or owing to his/her religious identity as a Hindu. This case exhibits multiple religious markers that clearly establish it as a religiously motivated crime specifically targeting a Hindu victim. The perpetrator did not only commit sexual violence but also tried to force the Hindu woman to abandon her faith and adopt Islam against her will. He assaulted her and threatened her family with death to coerce her into converting to Islam. He not only violated her by raping her but also recorded obscene videos to blackmail her into converting to Islam. This act goes beyond mere criminal behaviour; it is a calculated and malicious attack on her religious identity. By assuming a false Hindu identity, the Muslim perpetrator betrays the girl's trust, manipulating her into a situation where he can coerce her into abandoning her faith. The use of blackmail to force conversion is a clear demonstration of religious hate, as it targets the victim's religious beliefs and seeks to erase her identity. This case is a glaring example of how deep-seated intolerance can manifest in violent and coercive actions, with the ultimate goal of religious subjugation and domination. The deliberate nature of the deception and the subsequent attempt to force conversion highlights the extent of disdain the accused harboured for the victim's faith, making this a clear case of religiously motivated hate. Further, the perpetrator invoked the Pahalgam attack to intensify fear and isolation. The explicit reference to the Pahalgam terror attack, where Hindu pilgrims were massacred by Islamic terrorists after confirming their religious identity, makes it evident that the perpetrator deliberately targeted the Hindu woman because of her religious identity. By invoking that specific incident, the accused sent a chilling message: your faith makes you a target, and I will ensure you suffer the same fate unless you submit. This was not incidental language—it was calculated religious profiling. The use of such a loaded threat demonstrates that the victim’s Hindu identity was central to the abuse she suffered. She was harassed, sexually violated, stalked, and threatened because she was Hindu and refused to give up her faith. The intention of the accused was not just personal control, but religious domination through intimidation and sexual violence. Such targeted victimisation based on religion not only demonstrates a fundamental disregard for Hinduism but also exposes a deeper animosity toward Hindus and their beliefs. This is why this case has been included in the tracker, as it exemplifies a clear instance of religiously motivated hate and exploitation.
