Minor Hindu girl kidnapped, converted and impregnated by a Muslim youth

Case Summary
A 14-year-old minor Hindu girl was lured, manipulated and kidnapped by a Muslim guy named Naushad Alam, from the Vasant Kunj South police station area in South Delhi. It was later found out that Naushad had known the girl for only 15 days before kidnapping her. He took her to Pune, converted her religion to Islam, and married her there. The case was assigned to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), which initiated a detailed investigation. It was discovered that the girl had used her mother’s mobile phone and was in contact with two young men, Aadi and Naushad. Further questioning revealed that Aadi had introduced the girl to Naushad, who subsequently lured her and abducted her from Delhi. After being contacted by the police, Naushad attempted to evade arrest by relocating the minor Hindu girl from Maharashtra to Himachal Pradesh. He was eventually tracked down and arrested in Himachal Pradesh, and the girl was successfully rescued. Following her recovery, a medical examination confirmed that she was 1.5 months pregnant. As of the date of writing this report, Naushad Alam had been taken into custody, and a case was registered against him under relevant sections at the Vasant Kunj South Police Station.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Predatory Proselytisation. The sub-category selected here is- Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. The tertiary category relevant here are- Rape and sexual assault/harassment and Conversion of minor. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case constitutes a clear instance of a religiously motivated hate crime. The accused, Naushad, a Muslim boy, deliberately targeted a Hindu minor girl, manipulated her and abducted her. He then converted her religion to Islam and sexually exploited her, resulting in her pregnancy at just 14 years of age. The selection of a minor, specifically from the Hindu community, and the calculated grooming leading to her conversion and sexual assault indicate an intentional act aimed at altering her religious identity through coercion. Here, since the victim was a minor, it essentially means that the element of consent and genuine change of conscience was missing ab initio. It is a well-established fact that children are more susceptible to manipulation since they are still developing emotionally, cognitively, and socially. Their brains are not fully mature, making them more vulnerable. This case demonstrates a calculated strategy of targeting those who are less able to resist or understand the long-term implications of conversion, making it a significant case of religious-motivated hate crime. These actions reflect a broader pattern of targeting non-Muslim minors for religious conversion, which aligns with the criteria for religiously motivated hate crimes outlined in the database. The religious identity of the victim appears central to why she was chosen, which makes the act not just criminal but communally charged. Such crimes go beyond isolated personal offences, they point to a disturbing trend of eroding the cultural and religious fabric of minority communities through manipulation, coercion or sexual exploitation. Here, the combination of grooming, forced conversion, sexual exploitation and targeting based on religion places this incident firmly within the scope of a hate crime.
