Hindu woman drugged, raped, blackmailed and pressured to convert by a Muslim family

Case Summary
In Bhagatpur, a Hindu woman was drugged and raped, and later pressured to convert to Islam. The incident occurred within the local police station's limits. According to the victim, she had known a young Muslim man from Chandpur Garhi for some time. When she fell ill, the young man suggested that she obtain a tabeez from his father. Trusting him, the woman travelled to Chandpur to meet his father. Upon arrival, the accused lured her into a room under a pretext and offered her a soft drink laced with an intoxicating substance. The woman stated that she lost consciousness after consuming it and, upon waking, found herself undressed. The accused then blackmailed her with threats to circulate compromising photographs. Traumatised, she returned home but later went back to confront the accused’s family. During this visit, she was subjected to abuse and pressured to convert her religion by the accused’s father, wife, and mother. When she refused, they assaulted her and used abusive language. Despite filing a complaint, the police initially failed to act. The woman then sought legal intervention, following which the court directed that an FIR be registered against four individuals, including Rizwan, Qari Ehsaan, and Rizwan’s wife. Inspector Rajendra Pratap Singh confirmed that an investigation was underway, and further action would be taken based on the inquiry's findings.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case was categorised under the primary category- Predatory Proselytisation. Under that, the relevant subcategory selected is- Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. This case represents a disturbing pattern of targeted exploitation where religious conversion was pursued through manipulation, coercion, and abuse. The perpetrator leveraged the victim’s trust and vulnerability, initially by suggesting a spiritual remedy for her illness, only to use it as a means to violate her. The assault was not just to harm her physically, but was followed by blackmail, intimidation, and pressure to renounce her religion and adopt an alien one. The involvement of multiple family members in the subsequent effort to forcibly convert the woman further reveals a coordinated and deliberate attempt to harass and coerce her into conversion against her will. Their actions, ranging from emotional blackmail and verbal abuse to physical violence, underscore a larger, ideologically driven intention to erase her religious identity and impose another through force and fear. The clear pattern of deception, coercion, and assault grounded in religious motive makes this a hate crime and warrants its documentation in the Hinduphobia tracker.
