Hindu girl lured, sexually exploited and threatened to kill by a Muslim man posing as Hindu

Case Summary
A Hindu woman (30) from the rural police station area of Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, was deceived, sexually exploited and threatened by a Muslim man who hid his true identity. The accused, a Muslim man, posed as a Hindu named "Ankit Sharma" to trap her in a false relationship. According to the victim, she met the accused near Mullaji Petrol Pump around seven years ago. Introducing himself as Ankit Sharma, the man took her mobile number under the pretext of helping her. Over time, they developed a romantic relationship, during which he gained her trust and established physical relations with her on the promise of marriage. Later, when the woman brought up the topic of marriage, the man disclosed his real name — Mirza Javed (34), a Muslim resident — and outright refused to marry her. He also threatened to kill her if she pursued the matter further. The victim filed a written complaint with the police, following which a case has been registered against the accused under relevant legal sections. Police station in-charge GS Rajput confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and efforts are being made to locate and apprehend the accused, who is currently absconding.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This particular case has been added to the tracker under two primary categories. The first is: 'Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes'. Under this, the sub-category selected is:- 'Man pretends to be Hindu', with a tertiary sub-category being: - ''Name changed' and 'Pattern of targeting Hindu women'. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The Chhindwara case qualifies as a religiously motivated hate crime based on the documented patterns of several Muslim men targeting Hindu women and making sexual relations with them on the pretext of marriage by purposefully pretending to be Hindu. In this case, the intentional deception by the accused, Mirza Jawed — a Muslim man posing as a Hindu named “Ankit Sharma” — establishes malafide intent from the outset. His deception was a calculated move to gain the trust of a Hindu woman and make sexual relations with her, knowing that his true religious identity might result in immediate rejection. This deception continued for years and was coupled with promises of marriage, leading to physical intimacy under false pretences. The fact that the man revealed his real identity only when the woman pressed for marriage, and then responded with death threats, strongly indicates that the woman's Hindu identity was central to both the deception, sexual exploitation and the subsequent intimidation. Although there was no direct attempt at forcing her to convert or change her religion, the perpetrator hid his religious identity to entrap the woman. This act of deceit itself is a form of manipulation rooted in religious bias, aimed at undermining the woman's ability to make an informed decision about her relationship and religious life. Then the threat of violence after being exposed, along with the years of deception and sexual exploitation, further shows that religious motivations drove this crime. It is beyond a reasonable doubt that Mirza Jawed didn’t just want a relationship; he specifically targeted the victim just because of her Hindu identity and used deceit and threats to control and exploit her.
