Hindu boy stabbed to death; local Hindus protest against constant harassment by Muslim gangs, put up 'Houses For Sale' posters

Case Summary
A 17-year-old Hindu boy named Kunal was brutally stabbed to death in broad daylight in the J Block area of Seelampur, Delhi. He had stepped out to buy milk to make tea for his ailing father when he was attacked with knives. Kunal was rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Family members stated that the assailants were from the Muslim community. Among them was Zikra, a local Muslim woman reportedly known in the area as a "lady don", who was said to be present at the crime scene during the fatal attack. Police have taken Zikra into custody and detained her cousins, Sahil Khan and Rihan Mirza, for questioning. A third person is also being questioned, though his identity has not yet been disclosed. Speaking to the media, Kunal's mother recounted the tragedy. She said, “A few days ago, there was an incident where my son was just a bystander while someone was being assaulted. After that, he began receiving threats. He was also taken to the hospital at the time. We hadn’t eaten for two days. That evening, he just asked for milk and a samosa and went out. By 7:15 PM, we were told he had been stabbed.” She also said that the doctor who treated Kunal earlier was assaulted by some individuals involved. Following the murder, local residents staged widespread protests in Seelampur, blocking roads late into the night of April 17 and continuing the next morning. Protesters held placards demanding justice and raised slogans like “Modi ji madad karo, Yogi model chahiye” (PM Modi, help us, we need the Yogi model). Tensions remain high in the locality, particularly among Hindu families who say they live under constant threat from criminal gangs led by local Muslims. Some families have even begun putting up "house for sale" posters, expressing their desperation and fear. Residents told media outlets that the Hindu community in the area is routinely harassed by Muslim gangs, who they allege are protected due to political connections. “There have been six murders of Hindus in the past few years. These gangs are powerful and have political backing. The councillor and MLA support them. Police are aware but remain inactive,” said one local resident, speaking to Aaj Tak. Sources suggest the murder may have been an act of revenge for a prior altercation. Months ago, members of Zikra’s gang were reportedly involved in a fight where one, Sahil, was injured. Although Kunal was acquainted with the boys involved, his family maintains that he neither took part in the fight nor belonged to any gang. According to police sources, Kunal had received a warning earlier on the same day and was attacked later that evening.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of- Attack resulting in death. Within this, the sub-category selected is- Attacked for Hindu identity. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. The brutal killing of a 17-year-old Hindu boy in Seelampur highlights targeted violence against a member of the Hindu community. This was not a random act of crime, but one rooted in a simmering communal hostility. Kunal, a minor with no known involvement in any criminal activity or gang, was ambushed and stabbed while carrying out a simple domestic errand—buying milk for his ailing father. His murder, allegedly carried out by individuals from the local Muslim community, comes against the backdrop of previous threats and intimidation. His family and local residents have consistently alleged a pattern of harassment and targeted aggression towards Hindus by dominant criminal gangs in the area, who are said to enjoy political patronage and immunity. Kunal’s only supposed connection to a past incident was his presence as a bystander during a previous altercation involving members of the accused group—an incident for which he was reportedly threatened in advance. That he was singled out, warned, and later killed points to a premeditated act rooted in communal bias, rather than a spontaneous scuffle. The local Hindu population’s subsequent outcry, their testimonies of sustained fear and threats, and even public protests demanding state intervention, reflect the communal nature of the hostility they face. The murder thus represents not just an act of violence, but one where the victim’s identity as a Hindu played a key role in making him a target. In light of the targeted nature of the killing, the sustained harassment faced by the Hindu community in the locality, and the communal overtones evident in the buildup and aftermath, this incident clearly qualifies as a hate crime and merits its inclusion in the Hinduphobia tracker.
