Case Summary

In a village in Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand, Hindu women were lured and befriended by two Muslim men on social media. The accused posed as Hindus to deceive the victims and establish a connection with them. According to media reports, the Muslim accused ran a salon business in the Tagore Nagar Teenpani area. They concealed their identities, masqueraded as Hindus, and sent messages to Hindu women using fake accounts on social media. In this manner, the accused befriended them and began chatting with them, attempting to form a friendship or relationship. When workers of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Sena, two Hindu organisations, learned of this, they reached the accused's shop on 17th December 2025 and questioned them. During this, the two Muslim accused abused the Hindu activists. On this, the workers of the organisations caught both of them and took them to the police station. They handed over the accused to the police and demanded strict action against them. At the time of writing this report, the Circle Officer Bhupendra Singh Dhoni said that the matter is under investigation. Vishwa Hindu Parishad's Youth Front Vice President Tarak Mandal stated that in recent times, many outsiders had concealed their true identities by changing the names of their shops. They create fake IDs using Hindu names on social media and conduct campaigns to trap Hindu women and teenagers for forced conversions or sexual exploitation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case is being added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is- Man pretends to be Hindu. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, the Hindu victims were deceived into a friendship/relationship by Muslim men pretending to be Hindu. The perpetrators' act of deception by posing as Hindu demonstrated a clear bias and malicious intent towards the victims' religion. By hiding their true identity, the Muslim men manipulated the Hindu women's trust and targeted them under false pretences, indicating a premeditated effort to exploit the women based on their religious background. This constituted a direct violation of the victims' right to informed consent regarding whom they chose to be in a friendship or relationship with, as well as an infringement upon their religious beliefs. Thus, the perpetrators' deliberate decision to hide their religious identity strongly underscored the religious motive behind this crime. In such instances, identity concealment is not just a deceptive tactic for personal reasons but a calculated strategy rooted in religious profiling and targeting. The accused knew that the victims, being Hindu, would likely refuse their advances if they knew the accused's real identity, and the Muslim men circumvented this by lying, which directly pointed to a religiously driven intent. This deception reflected a larger pattern where Hindu women are specifically singled out using false identities by Muslim men, often with coercion or conversion in mind. Such targeted victimisation based on religion not only demonstrated a fundamental disregard for Hinduism but also exposed a deeper animosity toward Hindus and their beliefs, making it an anti-Hindu hate crime. Given that this case meets the parameters of a religiously motivated offence, it is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records the dates of incidents based on when the crime occurs rather than when it is reported by the media. In this case, the media reported it on 18th December 2025. However, the media report has not stated the exact date from when the victims' ordeal began. It only states the date 17th December 2025, the date when Hindu activists confronted the perpetrators. Henceforth, this date is being used as the indicative date of the incident for documentation purposes only.
