Tabrez Khan arrested for pretending to be Aryan for marrying Dalit girl
Case Summary
In Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, a case of love jihad surfaced when a young man named Tabrez deceived a Dalit girl by pretending to be someone else. Tabrez, presenting himself as 'Aryan', claimed to be a police inspector posted in Gorakhpur. He engaged in a year-long relationship with the victim and even had physical relations with her. Upon the proposal of marriage, Tabrez agreed, and the wedding was scheduled for February 25, 2024. However, on the wedding day, Tabrez arrived alone, claiming his mother had a heart attack. He later appeared at the girl's house as the groom, adorned in wedding attire, and performed Hindu rituals. Suspicions arose when fake jewelry was discovered, followed by the revelation of Tabrez's true identity as a Muslim. An FIR was filed by the girl's father, leading to Tabrez's arrest.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The distinct element in this particular case that demonstrates that the Muslim perpetrator committed the crime while harbouring a bias against the Hindu faith is that the accused pretended to be a Hindu to deceive the victim. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime.
