Ayan Pathan of Guna rapes, assaults and tortures Hindu woman for property, arrested

Case Summary
A 24-year-old man identified as Ayan Pathan was arrested in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district on April 18, 2024, for assaulting, raping and torturing a Hindu woman. According to police officer Dileep Rajoriya, the accused was pressing the 23-year-old woman to marry him. The victim's mother stated that the accused wanted their property. A video circulating on social media features the victim woman who says that the accused, who is her neighbor, had trapped her in a relationship. He used to abuse her with a leather belt and an iron instrument, he further poured salt and chili powder into her wounds and also put Fevicol in her mouth once to shut her up. The accused held her hostage for a month and frequently raped her. On the night of April 17, Pathan was apprehended when he was illegally distributing alcohol.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the woman was admittedly in a relationship with the Muslim man. Somewhere during the course of that relationship, the perpetrator started torturing the woman and forcing her to marry him. The family has alleged that the torture was because he wanted her property. The crime itself in this case is the violence itself, however, a latent motivation of such brutal torture could possibly be religious animosity towards the Hindu woman. It has been documented several times before that rape and torture are often used by Islamist perpetrators because of the dehumanization of Hindu women, and the motivation to humiliate non-Muslim women. In this case, however, while there is a suspicion, there is no direct indication that the crime was committed owing to religious animosity. Therefore, it is categorized as 'undecided'. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
