Homes and religious places of Hindus attacked in West Bengal
Case Summary
On April 13, 2024, miscreants vandalised Hindu religious places in Maujampur and Mirzapur in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Videos surfaced showcasing how they targeted homes of innocent people and carried out destruction. The power supply was also disconnected to aid the devastation. BJP MP Locket Chatterjee took to X (formerly Twitter) to inform that Hindus were being targeted with impunity and sought help from the Election Commission.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. In this case, miscreants specifically targeted the homes and religious places of Hindus. There was no provocation from the Hindu side. Merely the fact that the victims were Hindus prompted the attack. Moreover, it is important to mention here that though the last update was that the miscreants were unknown, regardless, the action stemmed out of hatred against Hinduism and resulted in the vandalism of Hindu homes and religious places and would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime.
