Hindu girl found hanging in chamber of Muslim advocate; suicide note hints at forced conversion angle
Case Summary
In the Kakdwip town of South 24-Parganas, West Bengal, the body of a 21-year-old Hindu girl named Sonia Halder was found hanging inside the chamber of a Muslim advocate named Sheikh Monowar Alam. According to reports, Sonia, a first-year student at Hindu Law College, frequently visited Alam’s chamber for practical training and had left her home on the morning of 12 November 2025 as usual. However, she did not return, and her body was discovered hanging from the ceiling in the chamber of the advocate. The accused, Advocate Sheikh Monowar Alam, himself called the family to inform them of the situation and then absconded before anyone reached the location. Police recovered the body and sent it to Kakdwip Sub-Divisional Hospital for autopsy. A bag containing love letters was also recovered from the scene, which the family interpreted as evidence of an intimate relationship and emotional manipulation. A suicide note was found using the words “Allah” and “Khuda Hafiz,” which the family believed pointed to a possible religious conversion angle. The victim's family filed a complaint with the police, stating that Sheikh Monowar emotionally manipulated Sonia and promised to marry her, but withdrew from it, pushing her to this tragedy. Based on the complaint, police registered a case of unnatural death and began an investigation, along with a search to locate the absconding advocate.

Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the Undecided database because there is not enough conclusive evidence to confirm a religious motive at this stage. In this incident, a Hindu girl was found hanging inside the chamber of the Muslim accused. Several factors made the circumstances appear suspicious, such as the recovery of love letters, the family’s statement that the accused had promised marriage but later backed out, and his immediate disappearance after informing the family of the situation. The presence of a suicide note containing Islamic phrases like “Allah” and “Khuda Hafiz,” despite the victim being Hindu, added further complexity and raised the possibility of a religious conversion angle. Since the girl was an adult, the use of Islamic phrases in the note also leaves open the possibility that she may have adopted those expressions or even the faith on her own volition, which further complicates the motive. This incident also resembles a broader pattern in which Hindu women involved in interfaith relationships with Muslim men have gone missing or been found dead under suspicious circumstances. In several such cases, Hindu women have been religiously profiled and targeted for manipulation or exploitation, often driven by hostility toward Hindus and Hindu identity. Even so, without verifiable evidence that the accused in this particular case acted out of religious animosity or coercive intent related to conversion, it would be premature to classify it as a religiously motivated hate crime. Therefore, due to the lack of clear proof establishing that the victim was targeted because of her faith or that religious hostility directly influenced the events leading to her death, this case remains in the Undecided category. If further investigation reveals signs of religiously motivated intent or coercion, it will be moved to the hate crime database accordingly.
