Case Summary
An injured cow was tied behind a bullock cart and cruelly dragged along the road by two Muslim men and one unidentified individual in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh. After a video of the incident went viral on social media, the police took immediate action and filed a case against three individuals involved. According to Kumar Ranvijay Singh, the Senior Superintendent of Police (City), the viral video shows an injured cow being tied with a rope and ruthlessly dragged across the road. In the investigation, two of the accused, Shahzad and Kaif, have been identified, while the third person, who was driving the bullock cart, is still being sought by the authorities. The incident took place in the Nagfani police station area of Moradabad. After the video came to light, the police, recognising the sensitivity of the case, immediately initiated an investigation. The accused were charged under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police launched raids to arrest the accused, and the investigation was expedited after confirming the authenticity of the video.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case brutal treatment of an injured cow sits within a broader moral universe in which the cow is not simply livestock but an emotionally and spiritually charged symbol of compassion, nourishment and motherly protection within Hindu civilisational ethics, and acts of cruelty against the cow therefore understandably produce a heightened sense of injury among ordinary Hindus because the cruelty touches something deeper than physical harm to an animal. That said, based on presently available information, there is no clear evidence that the perpetrators executed this act to mock, humiliate or intentionally injure Hindu identity, and there is no verified indication at this point that the motive was religious rather than simply an act of sadism. Consequently, this case cannot, at this stage, be conclusively placed within the category of religiously motivated hostility against Hindus and is being added to the undecided database.
