Case Summary

In Gorathani village of the Atraulia police station area in Azamgarh, unidentified assailants broke into a cowshed late at night and brutally killed two cattle. The attackers took away the meat and fled the scene. The incident happened on 8th November 2025, leaving the residents deeply angered and distressed. The cowshed belongs to villager Hariram Yadav. He explained that he usually slept in the cowshed to look after the animals, but had returned home that night because his wife had suddenly fallen ill. Taking advantage of his absence, the miscreants broke the lock and carried out the killing. The next morning, when Hariram reached the cowshed, he found the remains of the slaughtered cattle scattered around. Their heads and legs were recovered from the site. Upon receiving information, the Atraulia police arrived to investigate, and Block Chief Chandrashekhar Yadav also visited the location. The horrific incident drew a large crowd of outraged villagers demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible. Locals linked the attack to an earlier police encounter that had taken place on 7th November 2025 near the Jokhara bridge in the Raunapar police station area. In that joint operation by the Lucknow STF, SWAT team, and Sidhari police, a wanted criminal named Waqib alias Wakif, carrying a reward of ₹50,000, was killed. Villagers suspected that the killing of the cattle may have been an act of retaliation following that encounter. Station House Officer Amit Mishra stated that efforts were underway to identify the suspects and assured that the accused would soon be taken into police custody.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, it is important to highlight that the cow holds a sacred status in Hindu society. The slaughter of a cow is regarded not only as an act of cruelty but also as a direct attack on the Hindu faith and identity. The killing of cows has often been carried out by non-Hindu individuals, creating deep religious animosity and inflicting wounds on the sentiments of the Hindu community. Historically, cow slaughter has also been deliberately used as a tool to provoke, humiliate, weaken Hindus, and even to attempt forced conversions by compelling them to consume beef. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus as a motivating factor. Also, some locals raised the suspicion that this act could be retaliation for the encounter of gangster Vakib just a day before. However, it is also possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the perpetrators found the shed unattended and took advantage of the situation. Since the investigation is ongoing, the identity of the culprits is unknown, and there is no concrete evidence of religious animosity behind the act. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that points towards a religious motivation behind this crime, it would then be reclassified and included in the hate crime database.
