Minor Hindu girl gang raped by Muslim youths; the perpetrators blackmailed the victim with obscene video and tried to extort money
Case Summary
A 15-year-old Hindu girl was gang rape by four Islamist youths, including two minors, within the Lalbarra police station jurisdiction in Balaghat district. The assault followed the accused's secret recording of an obscene video of her, which they then weaponised to extort money through repeated threats. On October 26, the survivor accompanied a friend to a local fair. There, the accused—Danish (son of Salim Khan), Ayyub Qureshi, and two minor accomplices—covertly filmed objectionable footage of the girls. The group blackmailed the girls and demanded ₹10,000 to delete the video. When the victim's friend departed to secure the funds, the four accused gang-raped the 15-year-old. They subsequently escalated their demand to ₹40,000, warning that failure to pay would result in the video being circulated online. The Hindu girl alerted her family, prompting them to approach Lalbarra police. An FIR was lodged on November 1 under the POCSO Act, applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the IT Act. The family and members of the Hindu community stated that the police initially failed to respond promptly. On November 2, Vishwa Hindu Parishad representatives and community members visited the station and presented a memorandum insisting on immediate arrests and stringent legal measures. In response, authorities detained Danish and the two minors that day. Police seized mobile phones from the detained individuals and commenced forensic examination of digital evidence, and the accused were later remanded to judicial custody. Ayyub Qureshi, the fourth accused, was identified as a repeat offender with eight prior cases across multiple stations, evaded capture and remained absconding. SDOP Abhishek Chaudhary confirmed that efforts continued to apprehend him and that all proceedings adhered strictly to legal protocols.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, two girls were covertly recorded and blackmailed while one of them, a minor Hindu girl, was gang raped by four Muslim youths. Such actions raise grave concerns about religious profiling and the targeting of Hindu girls. It is evident from multiple previous cases that Muslim men target Hindu girls in this manner, driven by deep-seated religious animosity towards Hinduism and the Hindu community at large. Hindu girls and women are highly vulnerable to sexual exploitation at the hands of Muslim men. However, it is also possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the Hindu girl was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrator. Here, it could also be argued that for a Muslim perpetrator, a Muslim girl would likely be more accessible than a Hindu girl. Nevertheless, this remains highly speculative, as the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations. Furthermore, neither the victim nor her parents made any statements suggesting a religious motive behind the crime. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that points towards a religious motivation behind this crime, it would then be reclassified and included in the hate crime database.
