Poor Hindus lured for conversion in the name of prayer meeting in Katni, Madhya Pradesh
Case Summary
On 9th November 2025, activists from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal protested against illicit religious conversion efforts during a prayer gathering in the Mission Chowk area under the Kotwali police station jurisdiction in Katni city. The group stormed the home of Arvind Peter, a local Christian resident from Kaimore, where around 25 to 28 Hindu individuals had assembled for a session led by Gyanendra Das. The Hindu activists stated that vulnerable, low-income Hindu families were being enticed with incentives to abandon their faith and convert, prompting them to alert authorities right away. Station House Officer Rakhi Pandey, accompanied by her team, swiftly responded to the call, reaching the location to conduct on-site interrogations of Das and the attendees. Those questioned maintained that their participation was entirely voluntary, aimed solely at communal prayer without any coercive elements. Pandey confirmed that initial probes yielded no immediate proof of inducements for conversion, though she emphasised the case's volatility. Given its potential to inflame communal sentiments, the police committed to an exhaustive review, documenting witness testimonies and delving into additional evidence to ensure all angles were covered comprehensively. The episode highlighted ongoing frictions over religious practices in the region, but no arrests or further escalations were reported at the time.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a man was organising a Christian prayer meeting attended by several Hindus in a rented apartment. There is a strong suspicion that the man was indulging in brainwashing and indoctrinating, which would be considered predatory in nature. The context and sequence of events here bear striking resemblance to numerous past incidents where “conferences”, “healing sessions”, or “prayer meetings” were later exposed as covert proselytising exercises. These events often begin as innocuous community or social gatherings but gradually evolve into platforms for indoctrination, where faith-based manipulation and emotional grooming are employed to influence vulnerable individuals, particularly from lower-income or socially marginalised Hindu families. However, this is highly speculative and as per the available information, some of the attendees stated that they were there of their own free will. It is entirely possible in this case that the group was just learning about Christianity. Since the investigation is ongoing, this case is being added to the undecided database. If more information emerges, it will be added to the hate crime database.
