Case Summary
In Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was deceived, sexually exploited and coerced for religious conversion by a Muslim man named Nasir, who pretended to be a Hindu. According to the victim, she came into contact with the accused about eight years earlier, while she was taking her daughter to a government hospital. The accused, an e-rickshaw driver, introduced himself as a Hindu unmarried man. He gradually gained her trust under false pretences and deceived her into a relationship. He then sexually exploited her under false pretext of marriage, though the accused was already married and had children. After repeated requests for marriage from the victim, the accused married her in court on 14 October 2024 using a fake address in Punjab. Following the marriage, he arranged a rented accommodation for her in the city and visited occasionally. When she became pregnant, the accused took her to a private hospital and forced her to undergo an abortion. Over time, he began pressuring the victim and her daughter to offer namaz and attempted to send the daughter to a madrasa, in an effort to convert them. The accused also physically assaulted her and threw her out of the house. When the victim went to the accused's house to reclaim her marital rights, Nasir, along with his first wife, father, and brother, physically assaulted her and drove her away. The victim also reported continuous threats and mental harassment from the accused and expressed fear for her daughter’s safety, stating that he might even have her killed. Subsequently, the victim along with the activists from the Rashtriya Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, a Hindu organisation, filed a complaint with the police and demanded strict action against the accused. Police Circle Officer Pankaj Lavania confirmed that an investigation had been initiated and that strict action would be taken after investigation.

These were symbolic impositions of Islamic religious identity and lifestyle upon the victims, aimed at slowly eroding the victim and her daughter's Hindu identity and cultural beliefs. By compelling them to perform Islamic practices and trying to detach the daughter from her Hindu upbringing, the accused engaged in psychological and spiritual coercion. These acts represented symbolic impositions of Islamic identity and lifestyle, strategically designed to erode their Hindu faith, weaken their cultural roots, and gradually replace their religious self-identification with that of another faith. This sustained pattern of pressure and manipulation constitutes targeted harassment driven by religious animosity and proselytising intent. Thirdly, when the victim repeatedly pressured the accused for marriage, he deceptively married her using a fake address, even though he was already married. He rented her an accommodation where he used to occasionally meet her and even got her child aborted. He also physically assaulted her and threw her out of the house. This further proves that he has no interest in a genuine relationship with the Hindu woman; instead, his only goal was sexual exploitation and religious conversion. The woman’s Hindu identity became the point of attack, first through deception, then through coercion, and finally through violence, marking this as a hate crime in both intent and execution. These actions go beyond mere criminal behaviour; it is a calculated and malicious attack on her religious identity. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith, since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised until they convert. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime.
