Hindu deities denigrated on social media by minor Muslim girl at the behest of her parents in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
A minor Muslim girl resident of Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh, posted a video featuring offensive comments about Hindu deities, including Lord Ram, on social media. The video led to widespread outrage, and the police registered a case against four individuals, including the girl. Following the controversy, the girl publicly apologised for her actions in front of the media. The incident took place in the Friends Colony area of Etawah. According to the police, the minor girl had posted a video on social media containing derogatory remarks about Hindu deities. Once the video went viral, several Hindu organisations strongly objected, demanding action against the girl. In response, the police registered a case against the girl, her parents, and one of her social media acquaintances, Asif. The girl took the action at the request of her parents and Asif, who encouraged her to make the video, suggesting that it would garner support from Muslim groups, increase her social media followers, and potentially lead to financial gains. During the investigation, it was revealed that the girl who made the video is a minor. The police presented her before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), where the committee conducted a thorough inquiry into the matter. Following the inquiry, an entry was made in the General Diary (GD) under the Juvenile Justice Act against the girl. As the controversy escalated, the girl apologised, stating that the act was a mistake made out of ignorance and that she would not repeat it in the future. Meanwhile, the police have started questioning the girl's parents. CO City Abhay Narayan Rai confirmed that both the girl and her parents have been detained for questioning. The police are continuing their investigation, and legal action will be taken against those found responsible for the incident.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category in this case is: Hate speech against Hindus. The subcategory under this is: Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus, with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem from inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith; therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case has been added to the Hinduphobia Tracker because it represents a clear instance of religiously motivated hate speech targeting the Hindu faith and its sacred figures. The minor Muslim girl deliberately posted a derogatory video mocking Lord Ram, a central deity in Hinduism, along with other deities. Such conduct is not an act of individual expression but a manifestation of deep-seated religious hostility intended to provoke, humiliate, and demean Hindus for their beliefs. The act becomes especially malicious and exposes the hate towards Hinduism in Muslims when considering that the minor Muslim girl was encouraged by her parents to post the offensive video to garner support and more online followers from the Muslim community. Even if the girl was a minor, her actions were directed by her adult parents, who motivated her to commit such a hateful action to receive praise and support from Muslim groups; hence, this incident cannot be brushed off as an innocent mistake from a minor child and should be considered as a deliberate instance of hate speech against Hindus. Hindu deities occupy an immensely important and sacred position in Hinduism and are deeply revered by the Hindu community. Targeting them in a derogatory and abusive manner is not merely offensive; it reflects direct religious animosity towards Hinduism and its followers. By publicly maligning revered Hindu deities, the accused not only disrespected the faith but also incited hostility, making this a clear example of a religiously motivated crime. Such actions are consistent with hate speech, as they were designed to provoke hostility, offend religious sentiments, and spread contempt for Hinduism and its adherents. In recent times, there has been a surge in derogatory memes, comments, abusive posts, and slanders directed towards Hinduism, its deities, the Hindu community, and respected Hindu scholars across online platforms. This case stands as a glaring example within that trend. The accused’s derogatory statements form part of a broader pattern of online Hinduphobia — a toxic environment in which hate against Hindus is normalised and spread through targeted insults and ridicule. Such actions serve to deepen divisions, attack Hindu identity, and vilify an entire faith community. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the video was posted on social media by the accused. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when it was reported in the media: 29th October 2025.
