Case Summary
A Hindu woman was deceived by a 25-year-old Muslim man posing as a Hindu with promises of love, coercing her into converting to Islam, and subsequently forced her into prostitution. Authorities filed a formal complaint against the perpetrator, Sohail Avesh Ansari. Police reports stated that Sohail posed as Vishal Jadhav to build a relationship with the victim and then raped her at a Satpur hotel, promising marriage, later compelling her to embrace Islam before the nikah. Details revealed that between May and September—a span of five months—the accused repeatedly forced the Hindu woman to engage in sexual acts with other men in Wadala village and whenever she resisted, brutally assaulted her. The victim logged a complaint at the Indiranagar Police Station in pursuit of justice, prompting authorities to advance the case based on her testimony and collected evidence. Assistant Commissioner Deshmukh confirmed that the police had launched a thorough investigation due to the gravity of the case and vowed to take stringent measures against the accused.

When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malicious intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. In both situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurising the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The third subcategory is: Brainwashed and/or groomed, with the tertiary category: Rape and sexual assault/harassment In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime. For the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity, with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. During the assault, the victim pleaded to 'spare her in the name of Bhagwan'. The perpetrators then asked her to plead in the name of Allah. This clearly indicates a religious motive for the crime and evidences the religious animosity the perpetrators harboured against the victim owing to her religious identity. Such cases would be added to this tertiary category since the religious animosity makes the crime a hate crime. This case is a clear instance of a hate crime against Hindus. Firstly, the accused lured the Hindu woman into a relationship by pretending to be Hindu. This act itself reveals bias against the woman and her religion. The accused knew the woman, being Hindu, would likely reject his proposal if she knew his true religious identity. Therefore, he deliberately concealed his identity and targeted her. This constituted a direct violation of her right to informed consent regarding whom she chose to be in a romantic relationship with. The perpetrator’s conscious decision to hide his religious identity clearly underscores the religious motive behind this crime. Such identity concealment goes beyond personal deception; it is a calculated strategy rooted in religious profiling that specifically targets Hindu women. This pattern of singling out Hindu women using false identities, often with coercion and conversion in mind by Muslim men, demonstrates a fundamental disregard for Hinduism and exposes deeper religious animosity. Secondly, the accused forced the Hindu woman to have a physical relationship before marriage and raped her and only then did he mention Nikah, forcing the victim to decide to convert under emotional duress. Under normal circumstances, if the Hindu woman were asked to convert, she would have felt betrayed and decided accordingly; instead, the accused used sexual assault as a tool of intimidation, leaving her with little choice but to convert and marry. This behaviour was intended to break her spirit and force her submission, exposing the malice held by the Muslim man towards the Hindu identity of the victim. Lastly, the Muslim man forced the victim into prostitution for his own financial benefit and beat her whenever she resisted. Even after conversion and Nikah, the Hindu woman was never considered a partner by the accused, who sold her body to different men. This complete denial to consider the Hindu women's emotions and welfare is the result of a fundamental disregard for Hinduism and exposes deeper religious animosity.
