Cow smuggling attempt foiled, Muslim accused attacked police with knife in Karnataka
Case Summary
On 22 October 2025, Puttur Rural Police thwarted an illegal cattle-smuggling operation. The confrontation unfolded near Bellichadavu in Ishwaramangala, along the Karnataka–Kerala border. The accused Abdullah, a 40-year-old resident of Kasaragod, Kerala, and an accomplice, were transporting eleven cattle in an Eicher vehicle from Hassan, Karnataka, toward Kerala for illegal slaughter. Acting on intelligence, the police signalled the truck to stop, but the smugglers ignored repeated warnings and fled, triggering a 10-kilometre chase across rugged border terrain. During the pursuit, the situation escalated when the smugglers deliberately rammed their vehicle into a police jeep, endangering the officers' lives. In response, the Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) fired two warning shots into the air, one of which struck the vehicle’s tyre, halting the escape. Abdullah attacked the policeman with a knife, which prompted the PSI to fire at his leg. His accomplice managed to flee the scene, prompting police to launch an immediate manhunt. Abdullah, injured in the encounter, was promptly transported to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru for treatment. Investigations revealed that Abdullah was no stranger to such activities. He had a prior criminal record, having been booked earlier in 2025 under the Karnataka Cow Slaughter Act (Case No. 33/2025) at Bellare Police Station for similar offences. Despite previous warnings and arrests, he had resumed smuggling, exploiting the porous interstate routes between Karnataka and Kerala. The police’s swift action not only prevented the illegal transport of the cattle but also disrupted an active smuggling network. The operation earned widespread praise from residents and Gau Rakshaks (cow-protection volunteers), who lauded the police for their firm yet lawful response in protecting animal welfare and public safety. However, the incident also sparked controversy, as certain left-leaning groups and social media voices attempted to frame the encounter through a communal and anti-Hindu lens, accusing authorities of bias. Such narratives were criticised for distorting the facts, shielding repeat offenders, and undermining the police’s efforts to enforce the law impartially. Following the incident, the Puttur Rural Police registered a fresh case against Abdullah and intensified patrols along the border to deter future smuggling attempts. Their decisive response sent a clear message that illegal cattle-smuggling operations would face stringent action, regardless of political or ideological pressures. The incident highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in tackling organised crime and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the rule of law while protecting animal welfare standards.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, two Muslim men were caught smuggling cows, and when confronted by the police, they attacked. The cow is considered sacred in Hinduism. It is not just an animal but a manifestation of sacredness that is worshipped and treated as a nurturing mother (gaumata) across various Hindu traditions. Protecting and serving cows (gauseva) is a deeply ingrained religious and cultural ideal. Any action that brutalises or denigrates the cow is perceived as a direct attack on the Hindu faith. Consequently, cow smuggling for slaughter has been outlawed in several states of India. The accused was a repeat offender who had been investigated and charged for the same crime earlier in 2025. Yet, there is a chance that such actions could just be motivated by greed, and the accused intended to sell the meat. In that case, cow slaughter would still be a criminal offence (as it is banned in Karnataka) but not a religiously motivated act. However, in this instance, since there is no concrete evidence that the crime had a religious component, the case is being categorised under the 'Undecided' database. If more details emerge that demonstrate religious animosity as a motivating factor behind the crime, then it will be added to the hate crime database.
