Christian missionaries conduct conversion meeting in Amethi's village, offer poor Hindus money and jobs
Case Summary
In Amethi's Shukul Bazar area, Christian missionaries were conducting religious conversions by gathering poor families and sick women in a village home, promising money and jobs. The incident came to light when villagers noticed the activities and reported them to the police. Satish Kumar, a local resident, filed a complaint stating that Prahlad, from a nearby district, along with his wife, was organising conversion efforts at the home of a villager named Suryakala. Following the complaint, police detained several people and recovered Christian literature, bank passbooks, and checkbooks from the scene. A case was then registered.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case is being added to the primary category 'Predatory Proselytisation' under the sub-category 'converting/attempting to convert by inducement'. Predatory Proselytisation is not just limited to threat, harassment, force and violence, but it also has contours of stealth. In several cases, the Hindu victim is exploited to convert, with non-Hindus taking advantage of their poverty. In such cases, the Hindu victim who is suffering financially is offered monetary benefits, including lucrative offers for jobs, health treatment, education, etc, to induce the victim into changing his/her religion. In such cases, the religious identity of the victim and the aim to disenfranchise him from his faith form the heart of the crime. Also, taking advantage of and exploiting an individual’s economic vulnerabilities is widely acknowledged as exploitation, forms of which are often penalised by law. Such cases therefore are considered religiously motivated hate crimes since the victim’s religious identity forms the very heart of the crime itself. This is a classic case where Christian radicals were trying to disenfranchise poor Hindus by manipulating their vulnerabilities and offering them the inducement of money. Such inducement for forcing anyone to convert alienates them from their fundamental rights and is therefore considered a hate crime.
