Hindu girls targeted through repeated use of fake Hindu identity and religious coercion by Muslim man
Case Summary
Aman Khan, posing as "Aman Gupta," was caught by the Hindu Jagran Manch for exploiting Hindu girls. Khan, originally from Chhatarpur, had been living in Indore for some time. He deceived girls into believing he was Hindu by tying a kalava (sacred thread) on his wrist and visiting temples with them. Over the course of his deception, he lured several Hindu girls, exploiting them both physically and financially. The young man was apprehended in Bajrang Nagar, Indore, after being tracked by Rajkumar Tetwal, the district coordinator of Hindu Jagran Manch. Initially, Khan introduced himself as "Aman Gupta," but after further questioning, he admitted to his real identity. He had been using this ruse to manipulate Hindu girls, even converting some of them to Islam after sexually exploiting them. Khan had also been living with a Hindu girl in a flat for over a year, hiding his true identity from her family. The flat was decorated with photos portraying him as a Hindu. He had also made arrangements to mislead his victims by tying the sacred thread and visiting temples to further convince them of his fabricated identity. Photos and videos of several girls were found on Khan's phone, corroborating his exploitation. This case marked the fifth reported instance of such crimes in a private telecalling company located in the Billient Convention, where Khan had worked. The Hindu Jagran Manch shared this information with the police, urging them to take strict action against similar incidents. Aman Khan was handed over to the Hira Nagar police.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the primary category 'hate crimes against women in relationship and sexual crimes'. Due to the various components of the crime, the case is being added to two sub-categories. The first sub-category is 'Man pretends to be Hindu'. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this sub-category, various tertiary categories have been chosen including 'name changed', 'wears symbols of Hinduism' and 'pattern of targeting Hindu women'. In this case, the perpetrator admitted that he has been changing his name and targeting various Hindu women in order to sexually exploit them. This establishes a pattern of targeting solely Hindu women, proving further the religious animosity he harboured against their religious identity. The second sub-category the case is being added to is 'forced conversion before marriage'. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. While the exact ways deployed to convert the women is not clear, it is clear that the Muslim man was pretending to be Hindu to lure the women into a relationship and then, forcefully converting them to Islam. Conversion and disenfranchising anyone from their faith on the basis of force, deception or allurement has the hallmark of a religiously motivated hate crime since the underlying motivation of the crime comes from religious animosity towards Hindus. Due to the various components of religiously motivated hate crime, this case is being added to the hate crime database.
