Aman Ansari attempts to abduct minor Hindu girl, assaults her with stick, threatens to kill her if she refuses to perform Nikah

Case Summary
Aman Ansari, a Muslim youth from the Kotwali area in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested for threatening a 16-year-old Hindu girl to convert to Islam and marry him. On October 22, 2024, Ansari entered the victim's home and physically assaulted her with sticks. He also threatened to kill himself if she refused to comply with his demands. Ansari had previously attempted to abduct the girl on October 5, 2024, but she managed to escape. The victim’s mother filed a formal complaint at Kotwali Police Station, detailing the ongoing harassment, which had caused significant distress for the family. The mother reported that the pressure from Ansari had led her daughter to miss important school exams. The accused was reportedly forcing the girl to marry him through a Nikah. The police, acting on the complaint, conducted an investigation and arrested Aman Ansari after raiding his home. Following his arrest, Ansari was interrogated and subsequently produced in court, where he was ordered to be sent to judicial custody.

Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats in this case find their root on discriminatory grounds which have the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion and forceful circumcision. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment in an attempt to make the Hindu victim abandon his/her professed religion and adopt the religion of the perpetrator. Further, it is important to mention here that the victim in this case was a minor, which means the element of consent and genuine change of conscience was missing ab initio. Minors, due to their young age and lack of maturity, are particularly vulnerable to manipulation and coercion. They may not have the ability to fully understand the implications of converting to another religion and the Muslim perpetrator purposely targeted and exploited this vulnerability of the victim. Since the religious motive of the crime is evident from these facts, this case has been documented as a hate crime.
