Seventeen minor Hindu girls rescued from Christian conversion attempt in Jamshedpur
Case Summary
At the Tatanagar railway station in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, 17 minor Hindu girls were being transported on the South Bihar Express for Christian conversion. A Hindu activist travelling on the same train became suspicious and immediately informed the local Hindu organisation and leaders. Hindu organisations promptly arrived at the station, intervened, and rescued the minor girls. They also apprehended three young men accompanying them, while two others managed to escape. According to reports, the girls were to be taken to the Karandih area for religious conversion. During the incident, three pastors from Jamshedpur also arrived at the railway police station in an attempt to secure the release of the detained youths, but protests by Hindu organisations and the anger of the crowd forced them to leave. A large number of people gathered at the station as news of the incident spread, creating a tense environment. The police rescued the girls, and the three apprehended men were taken into custody for questioning. As of the date of writing this report, an investigation was being conducted to determine the origin of the girls, their intended destination, and the details surrounding the planned religious conversion.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The case has been added to the tracker under the prime category of- Predatory proselytisation. Under this, the sub-category selected is - Proselytisation by brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. Within this, the tertiary category selected is- Pattern of targeting Hindus and Conversion of Minor. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting, regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because 17 minor Hindu girls were being transported for Christian conversion. It is further important to note here that all the victims were minors, which means the element of consent and genuine change of conscience was missing ab initio. Minors, due to their young age and lack of maturity, are particularly vulnerable to manipulation and coercion. They may not have the ability to fully understand the implications of converting to another religion, and the Christian perpetrator purposely targeted and exploited this vulnerability of the victims. Since this case exemplifies the use of coercion and manipulation to achieve religious conversion, it is a blatant act of religious hate, which is why it has been documented here in the hate tracker. Such acts are not merely criminal; they are ideologically motivated, reflecting religious prejudice and a deliberate intent to alter the religious identity of minors without their volition. The involvement of multiple adults, including the youths transporting the girls and the pastors who attempted to intervene on their behalf, indicates a coordinated effort to bypass the minors’ consent. This illustrates the insidious nature of targeting children for religious conversion, where trust and authority are exploited to achieve a religious agenda. The Christian faith, by its very theological foundations, places a strong emphasis on proselytisation. In pursuit of conversion objectives, Christian evangelists often employ unethical means, ranging from psychological pressure and misinformation to inducements such as money or jobs. In such cases, Christian missionary groups often target and brainwash socially and economically vulnerable Hindus to further their agenda of religious conversions. This form of coercion strips Hindus of their agency and dignity and enforces forced conversions. This incident was not random or isolated but reflects premeditated attempts to undermine Hindu faith, manipulate vulnerable minors, and convert them to Christianity. Given the clear elements of coercion, targeting of minors, and religiously motivated intent, this case has been included in the tracker.
