Case Summary

In Punganur of Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, a minor Hindu girl of Class 6 suffered a fractured skull after being brutally struck by her Muslim female teacher, Salima Basha. According to reports, the victim was a student of Bhashyam School in Punganur. The victim was being mischievous in class, which enraged the teacher, Salima Basha. The teacher threw a lunchbox at her, due to which the victim suffered a head injury. The blow left the student in pain, and although her mother, Vijeta, who is a science teacher at the same school, was present at the time, the seriousness of the injury was not immediately recognised. After a few days, when the victim complained of severe headache and dizziness, she was taken to a local hospital, which then referred her to a private hospital. A CT scan conducted at a private hospital in Bengaluru revealed that she had sustained a skull fracture. The victim's mother tried to approach the school principal, Subramaniam, but was ignored. Subsequently, the victim's parents lodged a formal complaint with the police against both the teacher and the school principal. The police initiated an investigation into the incident.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, the mother of a Class 6 Hindu girl named Sattwika Nagasri filed a police complaint, stating that her daughter was brutally struck on the head by her teacher, Salima Basha, after being mischievous in class. The complaint also noted that the school principal, Subramaniam, ignored the matter when approached. At Hinduphobia Tracker, many incidents have been documented where Hindus were targeted and violently attacked by individuals from the Muslim community over minor issues. Often, the retaliation by the Muslim perpetrators was disproportionately violent, leaving Hindu victims seriously injured. Such attacks were rooted in religious animosity towards the Hindu victims because of their faith, making them religiously motivated crimes. In this case, the severity of violence inflicted by the Muslim perpetrator on the minor Hindu girl could be seen by some as motivated by hostility, as the Hindu victim was singled out and brutally struck. However, it is also possible that the attack was a fit of rage and not explicitly driven by religious animosity. Since the investigation is ongoing, and neither the victim nor her parents have made any statements regarding a religious motive, key aspects of the incident remain unverified. Therefore, this case has been added to the Undecided Database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. If any further evidence emerges indicating deliberate targeting or malicious intent based on communal bias, the case will be reviewed and reclassified under the hate crime database.
