Hindu youth beaten to death for resisting cow smuggling in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
In Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, a 19‑year‑old Hindu youth named Deepak Gupta was murdered by cow smugglers after he resisted the illegal transport of cows and cattle. According to media reports, this incident occurred on 15th September 2025, when a gang of 10-12 cattle smugglers arrived in the village and attempted to steal domestic animals, including cows and cattle. Deepak Gupta, who had been preparing for the NEET examination in Gorakhpur, was among those who spotted the smugglers. He ran after them in an attempt to stop their vehicle. The smugglers dragged Deepak into their vehicle and held him there by force. They killed him by beating him to death and crushing his face. They later dumped his body about four kilometres from his home. News of the murder triggered outrage among villagers, who pursued the cattle smugglers and attempted to stop them. They managed to catch one of the criminals and beat him severely. Gorakhpur North SP (Superintendent of Police) Jitendra Srivastava and Pipraich station in‑charge Purushottam were injured while trying to rescue the criminal from the angry villagers. Deepak’s killing sparked further anger, with villagers staging protests on the Gorakhpur‑Pipraich road and blocking traffic.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, Deepak Gupta, a 19‑year‑old Hindu youth preparing for his NEET examination, was brutally killed by cow smugglers. He had only tried to resist the illegal transport of cows, sacred to Hindus as symbols of motherhood and protection. For this act of courage, he paid with his life. He was dragged, beaten, and his face was crushed—a level of barbarity that shocks the conscience. The brutality of this case and the disproportionate violence over Deepak’s simple attempt to stop cow smuggling raised grave concerns. This case has the potential to be categorised under the hate crime database, particularly as cows are revered in the Hindu faith, and it is possible that Deepak was killed for trying to protect the holy cows. At the same time, there remains uncertainty. It is equally possible that the smugglers carried out this violence not out of religious animosity but in a desperate attempt to escape, with Deepak becoming the target only because he tried to prevent them. Another reason this case has not been classified in the hate crime database is the absence of clear information about the identity of the smugglers. Because the perpetrators remain unidentified, it becomes very difficult to establish that Deepak was attacked specifically out of anti‑Hindu hatred. While the killing of a boy trying to protect cows touches upon sensitive religious ground, the motivational clarity required for a hate crime assessment has not been conclusively established. The Hinduphobia Tracker has strict parameters for marking an incident as a hate crime against Hindus. Since the religious motivation in this case remains unclear, this incident is currently being added to the “Undecided” database. However, if further evidence emerges that shows the smugglers acted out of religious animosity towards Deepak for being Hindu and resisting cow smuggling, the case will be reclassified and added to the Hate Crime database.
