Case Summary

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, a Hindu girl was harassed and coerced into religious conversion and marriage by a Muslim youth named Mukeem Khan. He also threatened to kill her family and throw acid on her if she did not comply with his demands. According to reports, the victim came into contact with the accused, a resident of Juna Risala locality, during her exams in April 2025. However, the accused began stalking her and harassing her, insisting that she marry him. He also pressured her to convert to Islam. He threatened her, stating that if she refused to marry him, he would slaughter her family like sheep and goats. On September 15, 2025, when the victim was on her way to learn Garba at Kankeshwari Maidan, the accused intercepted her at Subhash Nagar Chowk on his scooter and forcibly grabbed her hand. He demanded that she get on his scooter. When she started shouting, the accused again threatened her, saying, “You must convert to Islam and marry me. Otherwise, I will throw acid on you.” The victim sought assistance from Bajrang Dal workers, a Hindu organisation, who confronted the accused near Rajesh Joshi Udyan. When Bajrang Dal workers questioned the accused, he initially introduced himself under the false Hindu identity of “Mukesh.” On checking his identification, his real name was found to be Mukeem Khan, after which he was apprehended and handed over to the police. Bajrang Dal members also revealed that the accused’s mobile phone contained several obscene chats and evidence of money transactions involving more than half a dozen Hindu girls. The accused also admitted that a Muslim man named Farooq had been funding him to trap Hindu girls. Based on the victim's complaint, the accused was arrested by the police. Police booked Mukeem Khan under sections relating to intimidation, molestation, and forced conversion. As of the date of writing this report, the investigation was ongoing to uncover the wider network of funding behind the conspiracy.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under primary category of - Predatory proselytisation. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. In this subcategory, we would only include cases where the victim was harassed, threatened or coerced to convert. Cases where attempts were made to convert but the victim resisted would be documented in another sub-category. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. The second sub-category selected here is - Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination, with the tertiary category being - Pattern of targeting Hindus. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu girl was harassed and coerced into religious conversion and marriage by the Muslim accused. The conversion, in this case, was not incidental or a by-product of personal association, but a deliberate act aimed at erasing her Hindu identity. The accused stalked and harassed her while pressuring her to convert, threatening to throw acid on her and slaughter her entire family if she refused to comply. By targeting her faith and family, his actions reflected not only exploitation but also deep-seated disrespect for the victim’s religious autonomy. The intention was to break her emotionally and physically, making her more susceptible to conversion and marriage. This demonstrates a targeted strategy by the accused, directed specifically at an individual because of animosity towards her Hindu identity. In Islam, marriage to a non-Muslim partner is prohibited, which was why the victim was coerced for religious conversion. This was not random violence; it was systematic, targeted, and rooted in religious animosity. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim’s professed faith, since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised until they convert. These predatory tactics sought to suppress her professed Hindu faith and impose another religion through coercion and fear. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime. Furthermore, there were several obscene chats found in the accused’s phone, including money transactions involving multiple Hindu girls. He even admitted to deliberately trapping Hindu girls, which was funded by a Muslim man named Farooq. This shows that the Muslim perpetrator specifically chose to target the victim because of her Hindu identity, attempting to coerce her into conversion. The repeated targeting of multiple Hindu girls is not incidental but reflects a broader ideological pattern rooted in contempt for Hinduism. Within Islamic theology, there exists a strong emphasis on the supremacy of Islam and the belief that all non-Muslims should ultimately be brought under its fold. This doctrinal view fuels practices where Hindu women are singled out, deceived, coerced, or lured into relationships with the intent of religious conversion. Such actions are not just personal crimes but manifestations of a mindset that treats Hindus, particularly women, as soft targets to humiliate and weaken the Hindu community. The fact that these cases are so widespread and systematic shows that they are not isolated, but part of a concerted effort to undermine Hindu identity itself. By eroding the faith of Hindu women through grooming, manipulation, or outright coercion, perpetrators symbolically strike at the heart of Hindu society, seeking to diminish it generation by generation. In this sense, every such act is more than an individual violation. It is an attack on the Hindu religion, culture, and dignity, driven by an ingrained animosity that views Hinduism as something to be subjugated or erased. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that none of the media sources covering this case have specified the exact date when the victim's ordeal began, though it is mentioned that she came into contact with the accused in April 2025.
