Minor Hindu girl threatened and raped at knifepoint by Muslim man in Maharashtra
Case Summary
In Akola, Maharashtra, a 16-year-old Hindu girl was raped at knifepoint in her own house by a Muslim man named Tauhid Sameer Baid. According to reports, the incident occurred around 4:30 in the afternoon, when the victim's family had gone out for Ganesh Visarjan, and the victim was alone at her house. The accused, taking advantage of the situation, forced his way into the house and overpowered the girl. At the same time, a relative of the victim, who happened to pass by, heard strange noises coming from the house and tried to intervene, but the accused threatened him with a knife. Neighbours also gathered after hearing the disturbance, but the accused threatened them as well. During this commotion, the victim ran to a nearby house in an attempt to save herself, but the accused followed her there and raped her at knifepoint. He further threatened to kill her and her family if she resisted or spoke out. After committing the assault, he fled the scene. When her mother returned, the victim recounted the entire ordeal, following which a complaint was lodged at the police station. The police registered a case against Tauhid Sameer Baid under sections of rape, intimidation, and the POCSO Act. It was confirmed by SHO Abhishek Andhare that the accused already had criminal cases registered against him at Ramdaspeth police station and other places. As of the date of writing this report, a search operation was underway to nab the accused.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker because a minor Hindu girl was threatened and raped at knifepoint by the Muslim accused. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu minor girls due to inherent animosity towards Hindus and their faith. Hindu girls are very vulnerable to crimes like rape and sexual assault at the hands of Muslim men. However, it is also possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the Hindu girl was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrator. Meanwhile, it could also be argued that for a Muslim perpetrator, a Muslim girl would likely be more accessible than a Hindu girl. The fact that the accused knew she was alone at home and still pursued her after she fled could indicate deliberate targeting and religious profiling. Nevertheless, this remains highly speculative, as the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations. Furthermore, neither the victim nor her parents made any statements suggesting a religious motive behind the crime. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that points towards a religious motivation behind this crime, it would then be reclassified and included in the hate crime database.
