Hindu traditions insulted: Muslim woman defiles sacred pond at Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple
Case Summary
In Thrissur, Kerala, religious customs of the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple were defiled and disrespected by a Muslim woman named Jasmin Jaffar. According to reports, Jasmin, a social media influencer and former Bigg Boss Malayalam contestant, filmed a video at the Hindu temple while dipping her feet in the temple's sacred pond, Rudratheertham. The act violated long-standing temple protocols, as the pond is a sanctified space used for rituals such as the aaraattu (ceremonial bath), and photography or videography in the area was prohibited without prior permission. This led to massive outrage among devotees, Hindu organisations and the wider Hindu community. Following the incident, the Guruvayur Devaswom Administrator filed a formal complaint with the Guruvayur Temple Police. The temple authorities decided to conduct a six-day purification ritual in response to the breach of religious norms. The Guruvayur police confirmed that the complaint had been filed, and a statement submitted in court, and authorities awaited judicial directions before proceeding further. It is important to note here that in Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple, entry of non-Hindus is strictly prohibited. Thus, non-Hindus, such as Christians or Muslims, require a certificate from the Arya Samajam in Kozhikode for their entry. Jasmin Jaffar issued a public apology on Instagram and claimed that her actions were out of ignorance. She claimed that she had no intention of offending anyone. She later deleted the video as well.

Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of - Attack on Hindu religious representations. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Defiling religious customs. Sanatan Dharma is not a religion of one book, which is to say that while it has religious scriptures that form the central tenets of the faith, there are several traditions followed through thousands of years, mostly passed from generation to generation orally. There are several such customs and traditions that are followed by various Hindus and Hindu sects. Defiling of these traditions and customs is a breach of an individual or group’s religious practices. Such practices can range from dietary restrictions like not eating non-vegetarian food for a certain period of the year, not eating non-vegetarian food at all, not eating beef since the cow is considered holy in Hinduism, the sanctity of religious customs followed in the house (like many ISCKON devotees), etc. Any malicious action leading to the breach of such traditions or defilement of these traditions owing to animosity towards the faith or for the sake of activism stems not only from the lack of faith in the religion itself but also from disregard for the faith of the devotees who follow the customs/traditions and implicit bias against the faith, the tradition itself. Since these specific traditions are central to the faith of the devotees of that specific sect of Hindus, any non-compliance with these traditional rules would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The other sub-category relevant here is - Breaking rules of place of worship. Sanatan Dharma is not a religion of one book, which is to say that while it has religious scriptures that form the central tenets of the faith, there are several traditions followed through thousands of years, mostly passed from generation to generation orally. One of these oral traditions or written traditions is the rules of specific temples. Certain temples have rules which are traditional rules, dependent on the worship of the presiding deities. These rules and traditions have been followed for thousands of years whether they find scriptural mention or not. Such traditions are based on the nature and rules of worship of the presiding deity of that temple. Any non-compliance of these traditions owing to animosity towards the faith or for the sake of activism stems not only from the lack of faith in the presiding deity but also disregard for the faith of the devotees of that deity/temple and implicit bias against the faith, the tradition and the deity itself. Since these specific traditions are central to the faith of the devotees of that specific temple and presiding deity, any non-compliance with these traditional rules would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case has been added to the tracker because the religious customs of the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple were defiled and disrespected by a Muslim woman named Jasmin Jaffar. While on the surface, it might seem that the accused did this to gain social media traction, the underlying religious hostility in Islam and the communal identity of the accused cannot be ignored. In Islamic theology, there exists an ingrained religious hostility towards non-Islamic religious practices, including their temples and idols. Such actions are rooted in the doctrinal opposition of polytheism and polytheistic faiths, in this case, Hinduism, resulting in hatred against its followers and places of worship. Therefore, the religious identity of the accused cannot be separated from the act itself. By knowingly entering a sacred Hindu space and breaching rules that are explicitly laid down, the incident extended beyond mere ignorance and became an act of desecration that attacked the very sanctity of Hindu worship. The act of recording a video in a temple area where filming was expressly prohibited, and dipping feet in Rudratheertham, a sacred pond reserved only for rituals, amounted to a wilful act of defilement. If she genuinely wanted to record a video, she could have sought permission from the temple authorities, but instead she chose to ignore the sanctity of the space. Such acts not only disturb the spiritual atmosphere but also foster a climate of hostility towards Hindu temples and the broader cultural ethos of Sanatan Dharma. By normalising the breach of temple rules, this behaviour reinforces a narrative that these sacred customs are optional or dismissible, thereby fostering an environment of hostility and cultural insensitivity toward Hindu religious institutions and practices. Such deliberate violations cannot be viewed in isolation; they must be recognised as part of a broader pattern of disrespect and bias against Hindu places of worship. Hence, this case is included in the hate crime database. Furthermore, while being a Muslim and not following or believing in Hinduism, she entered the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple, a space where non-Hindus are strictly prohibited unless they obtain special permission through certification from the Arya Samajam in Kozhikode. Her deliberate entry into a sacred space of a religion she did not adhere to, combined with her actions that defied temple customs, demonstrated a conscious disregard for Hindu religious boundaries and an affront to the faith and traditions of the devotees. Such behaviour went beyond mere ignorance or social media attention and directly challenged the sanctity of Hindu worship, reinforcing the classification of this act as a Hindu hate crime. Therefore, for documentation purposes, the incident date has been taken as the date it was first recorded in the media.
