Hindu man deceived into marriage and forced to convert to Islam by Muslim woman posing as Hindu in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
In Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu man named Nitin Sharma was deceived into marriage through the concealment of religious identity. The victim was later pressured for religious conversion by his Muslim wife and her family members. According to reports, the victim, a resident of Tanda, stated that he had married a Muslim woman posing as a Hindu. The marriage was arranged through Pandit Narendra Sharma from Sardhana. During the meeting between the couple, the Muslim woman introduced herself as a Hindu woman named Bharti, daughter of Asha Devi. She also had a sister named Appu. The marriage was then solemnised on 28 November 2024 according to Hindu customs. After the wedding, Nitin observed a change in his wife’s behaviour as she showed no attachment to the idols of Hindu deities present in the house, and she also refrained from worship. After a few days, she returned to her parents' house. When Nitin came to pick her up, she refused to go with him and asked him to speak with her mother and sister. The environment of the house already seemed strange. When Nitin spoke with her mother-in-law, he discovered that his wife's actual name was Muskan, her mother’s name was Chhoti Begum, and her sister’s name was Afreen, and all were Muslims. He was then pressured to convert to Islam, given death threats, and a demand of ₹15 lakh was made if he wished to avoid conversion. He was also threatened with fake cases if he did not convert. It was further revealed that Muskan was previously married in Muzaffarnagar but had left her first husband before entering into marriage with Nitin under a false Hindu identity. Hindu organisations demanded that strict legal action be taken against the Muslim woman and her family. Nitin appealed to both the police and Hindu organisations for justice, fearing continued threats. Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Vipin Tada confirmed that instructions had been issued to the local police to investigate the matter thoroughly and take necessary action against those involved.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of - Men attacked for being associated with non-Hindu women. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Forced to convert after marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu woman marries a Hindu man and the force/pressure against the Hindu man to convert to Islam begins after marriage. In such cases, the marriage is consensual in most cases and often, there is no element of the non-Hindu woman hiding her religious identity. The marriage could be under the Special Marriages Act where neither parties are required to convert their religion for the marriage to be considered legitimate. While the victim in such cases enters matrimony assuming that religious identity is not a barrier, the non-Hindu woman starts to pressure the Hindu man to convert to Islam after marriage. In such cases, there is application of force/pressure by the perpetrator, including, denial of the man’s religious rights. Some of the means by which the man is forced/pressured to convert include forcing/pressurizing the man to involuntarily consume beef, pressurizing/forcing to read the Kalma, forced circumcision, forced to go to the mosque, etc. There are several instances where after marriage, the man voluntarily converts to Islam. Such cases are often argued to be a result of religious brainwashing, however, for the purpose of documenting religiously motivated hate crimes, in the absence of the victim complaining of forced conversion, such cases do not form a part of the database. The second sub-category selected here is - Threatened to convert by family of partner. When Hindu men are in a relationship with non-Hindu women, there are cases where the man faces threats to convert and change his religious identity by the non-Hindu woman or her family. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu woman known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu woman or her family starts forcing/pressurizing the Hindu man to convert to Islam and also assaults the victim to force him to convert. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu man converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the man was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. The third sub-category selected here is - Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu men are in a relationship with non-Hindu women, there are cases where the man is blackmailed to convert his religion. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu woman starts blackmailing a Hindu man to convert his religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu man is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to his family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu man was deceived into marriage by a Muslim woman who, along with her family, later pressured and harassed him for religious conversion. The deception and malicious intent were visible from the very beginning, as the woman had pretended to be Hindu to enter into the relationship and marriage. After the wedding, she quickly returned to her parental home, and when the victim came to bring her back, the truth of her and her family’s identity was revealed. From that point, he was harassed, threatened, and even blackmailed with financial demands, showing that the marriage was never meant for genuine companionship but instead, her goal was religious conversion and financial exploitation. Furthermore, in the Islamic faith, a marriage is deemed illegitimate if the non-Muslim partner does not convert to Islam. This doctrinal position often forms the foundation of such coercive pressure, where the family of the Muslim woman insists that the Hindu man abandon his faith to validate the marriage. Because of the ingrained element of religious supremacy in Islam, the perpetrator's family believes that such interfaith relationships diminish the family’s ‘honour’. Often in such cases, the refusal to convert by the Hindu man is seen not just as defiance but as an affront to their religious identity, prompting the family of the Muslim woman to escalate their tactics from overt brainwashing to outright violence to induce conversion. The victim was not only pressured but was also threatened with false criminal cases, financial extortion, and even death, all with the sole purpose of forcing him to surrender his religious identity. This clearly established that the real intent behind the marriage was religious subversion, coercion, and humiliation of a Hindu man for the sake of conversion. Such actions were rooted in religious animosity, which is why this case has been added to the tracker. Disclaimer: The victim stated that he married the Muslim woman on 28 November 2024. For the purpose of documentation, this date has been taken as the beginning of his ordeal. While media coverage of the incident emerged on 22 August 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records incidents based on when the victim’s suffering began, not when the case was reported.
