Muslim men sell fruits washed in spit-contaminated water during Sawan month; Hindu groups demand action to safeguard devotees
Case Summary
In Misrod, Bhopal, Hindu locals and Hindu organisations voiced their concerns over a Muslim man and his Muslim accomplice selling fruits washed in spit-contaminated water. According to media reports, a video of a fruit shop went viral in which a Muslim man was seen spitting into a water bottle. Another Muslim man nearby was then clearly seen spraying that water onto the fruits. Upon receiving information about the incident, members of a Hindu organisation reached the spot, raised strong slogans, and confronted the Muslims. The Hindu activists stated that the Muslim man seen spitting in the video was a maulana (Islamic cleric) who had deliberately worn a helmet to conceal his identity, and that the second person was the Muslim fruit seller sprinkling spit‑tainted water on the fruits. Following the incident, there was widespread anger among local Hindu residents. People said that this act had hurt the Hindu faith and their religious sentiments, especially because it took place during the holy month of Sawan, a sacred month for the devotees of Lord Shiva. After this, members of the Hindu organisation reached the Misrod police station, demanding action. They submitted a memorandum to the station in charge, calling for the removal of the Muslim fruit seller’s shop. The police stated that the video was under investigation and that the strictest action would be taken against anyone who broke the law. The police added that they were coordinating with the Municipal Corporation, which would also take appropriate action against the Muslim perpetrators. Hindu organisation members said some people were attempting to disturb communal harmony, and that they supported a thorough investigation into this matter.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
There are several incidents where Muslim perpetrators purposely spit in the food or at Hindus owing to their intrinsic religious animosity towards the Hindu faith and those professing it. It is a doctrinal fact that, according to Islam, spitting can "ward off Satan", and according to the same religious doctrine, non-Muslims are considered the manifestations of Satan. There is, therefore, a strong suspicion that the Muslim perpetrators washed the fruits with spit-contaminated water owing to religious animosity. However, since no such statement has been made by the police or the news reports, this case is being categorised under the Undecided database. If more information emerges showcasing religious animosity as a motivation behind the crime, then it will be added to the hate crime database. Disclaimer: The media report does not specify the exact date of the incident. For documentation purposes, the date of 11th August 2025—the date it was reported in the media—is being used as the incident date.
