Case Summary

In the Pardesipura area of Indore, a 23-year-old Hindu girl was deceived into a relationship, sexually exploited, and pressured for religious conversion by a Muslim man posing as a Hindu. The girl was held captive and made to recite the Kalma. According to reports, the victim got acquainted and became friends with the accused in 2022 through Facebook. The accused had a Facebook profile with the name Fighter Rajput through which he used to talk to the victim, and he told her that his real name was Sohail Rajput and that he was a Hindu. Over the course of a year, their friendship grew into a relationship, with the accused promising her marriage. Despite her parents’ objections, she agreed to the marriage. Sohil invited her to Ahmedabad on 21 June 2025 on some pretext, asking her to bring Rs 3 lakh and certain documents. He kept her in a hotel for two days, where he forcibly had sexual relations with her before marriage. Sohil made some documents in Gujarati and forced the victim to sign them, which she did not understand due to the language barrier. After this, he took her to a room in a friend’s plastic factory and made her stay there for some time. On August 3, 2025, the accused took the victim to his home in National Mill Chawl, where she met his mother, Shama Naaz Fatima, father, Saqir Iqbal, brothers Nadeem, Yasir, Sariq, sister Shiva and sister-in-law Gulsafa. Due to this, the victim came to know that the accused's real name was Sohail Khan and that he was a Muslim. The accused and his family then started pressuring the Hindu girl to convert to Islam. They forced her to recite the Kalma and changed her name to Sana Fatima. She was also forced to do Nikah (Islamic marriage) with the accused. After her marriage, she was essentially held captive inside the house and was not allowed to go outside. Her every movement was monitored. When she checked the accused's phone, it was revealed that he was talking to multiple Hindu girls. When she confronted the accused with this revelation, he told her that it was his job to trap Hindu girls. The victim mustered up the courage and contacted her mother and brother over the phone and told them everything. Together with them, she filed a complaint at the police station on August 9, 2025. The police immediately swung into action and registered a case against Sohil Khan alias Fighter Rajput, his mother Razia Begum, father Mohammad Yunus Khan, brother Zahid Khan, sister Nazia Khan, relatives Mohammad Rafiq, Mohammad Salim, Shabana Bi, Farhana Bi, Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Shahid, Mohammad Asif and Maulvi Abdul Rehman under sections of rape, fraud, forced conversion and intimidation. As of the date of writing this report, the investigation was ongoing.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within this, the sub-category selected is - Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being - Name changed and Pattern of targeting Hindu women. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The second sub-category selected here is - Forced Conversion after marriage, with the tertiary category being - Forced to do Nikah and Forced to read Kalma. In such cases, a non-Hindu man marries a Hindu woman, and the force/pressure to convert to Islam begins after marriage. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship. The marriage could be under the Special Marriages Act, where neither parties are required to convert their religion for the marriage to be considered legitimate. While the victim in such cases enters matrimony assuming that religious identity is not a barrier, the non-Hindu man starts to pressure the woman to convert to Islam after marriage. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both situations, there is application of force by the perpetrator, including the denial of the woman’s religious rights. Some of the means by which the woman is forced/pressured to convert include force-feeding beef, being forced to read the Kalma, being forced to wear a hijab, forced to undergo Halala, etc. There are several instances where, after marriage, the woman voluntarily converts to Islam. Such cases are often argued to be a result of religious brainwashing, however, for the purpose of documenting religiously motivated hate crimes, in the absence of the victim complaining of forced conversion, such cases do not form a part of the database. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu girl was lured into a relationship, sexually exploited, and pressured for religious conversion by a Muslim man who pretended to be a Hindu. The perpetrator deliberately concealed his religious identity to initiate and sustain a relationship with a Hindu girl. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. After the accused’s true identity was revealed, he, along with his family, pressured the victim to convert to Islam. They forced her to recite the Kalma and undergo Nikah with the accused. The victim's name was changed against her will. In Islam, conversion of the non-Muslim partner is seen as a prerequisite for Nikah, which was why the girl was pressured to convert and recite the Kalma. The accused also isolated her from her family, changed her name to a Muslim one, and held her captive inside his house. These actions were aimed at making her abandon her Hindu faith entirely and sever any connection to her original religious identity. Changing her name served as a symbolic erasure of her previous Hindu identity. Furthermore, it was revealed that the accused was targeting multiple Hindu girls. This proves that it was not an isolated incident but a pattern of targeting Hindu females. This kind of behaviour stems from deeper religious animosity towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Thus, in this case, it was the girl's Hindu identity that was the point of attack, first through deception, then through forced conversion and isolation. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime. It is important to highlight here that the accused admitted that it was his "job to trap Hindu girls". The accused’s own admission reveals more than just personal malice. It, in fact, points to a deeper ideological mindset rooted in Islamic teachings on conversion. In Islam, converting non-Muslims, particularly from targeted communities like Hindus, is framed as a religious obligation (da’wah or tabligh). Achieving conversion is seen as a meritorious act, justifying deception, manipulation, and coercion as acceptable means to fulfil what is perceived as a divine duty. This mindset is not merely individual but emerges from a broader communal narrative in which Hindus are viewed as kafirs (infidels) whose conversion is desirable or even obligatory. The accused’s deliberate use of a false Hindu identity, emotional manipulation, sexual exploitation, and eventual coercion into religious rituals reflects a calculated strategy aligned with this ideological framework. In this worldview, the moral codes that apply in interactions within the Muslim community are not extended to non-Muslims, enabling perpetrators to rationalise acts that would otherwise be condemned. By openly admitting his “job” was to target Hindu girls, the accused exposed the systematic nature of such grooming, where individual actions are part of a larger predatory effort to weaken the Hindu community through demographic and cultural change. This transforms the crime from an isolated offence into an act of religiously motivated hate, driven by a radical ideology that sanctions and encourages the targeting of non-Muslims for conversion by any means necessary. Disclaimer - Media reports state that the victim's ordeal began when she met the accused three years ago in 2022, though no exact date or month is provided. Thus, to document this case, we have used an indicative date—August 10, 2022—as a placeholder to represent the beginning of her suffering. While media coverage of the incident emerged on August 10, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported. Disclaimer - It was reported that he had targeted multiple Hindu girls. However, since only one victim came forward and filed a complaint, the victim count was recorded as 1.
