Case Summary

In Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, a 19-year-old Hindu girl was trapped in a love relationship and taken away by a Muslim man named Taha alias Sufiyan. According to the complaint filed by the girl's family, the accused was a resident of Mohalla Yusufzai, who forced the Hindu girl to convert to Islam and entered a live-in relationship with her. The accused lured the girl away by trapping her in a relationship, and also took cash of ₹1,50,000 along with gold and silver jewellery worth about ₹4,50,000 from the house. The victim’s mother, Archana Srivastava, stated that her daughter’s marriage had been fixed for 19 November 2025, with the engagement taking place on 6 April, because of which Taha took her away on 19 April 2025 and entered into a live-in relationship with her. She expressed fear that Taha might harm her daughter or would forcibly convert her to Islam. As of the date of writing this report, the case was registered by the police based on the mother's complaint. The investigation was ongoing. Bajrang Dal district convenor Dharmendra Singh visited the victim’s family and stated that an organised network was operating to convert Hindu girls to Islam through brainwashing, warning that if such activities continued, a large-scale protest would be launched.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, the mother of the Hindu girl filed a police complaint stating that her daughter was lured away by a Muslim man named Taha. According to the victim's mother, the man lured her daughter and might harm or convert her to Islam. As per the complaint, the entire sequence, from elopement to attempted religious conversion, was carried out through force. It is important to highlight that at Hinduphobia Tracker, we have documented several similar incidents where Hindu women and underage Hindu girls have been lured by Muslim men, coerced into converting to Islam, and subsequently subjected to exploitation. In such cases, the intent behind these actions is often rooted in religious bias and animosity towards the victims’ Hindu identity. The practice of feigning love and proposing marriage is used as a means to pursue the underlying goal of religious conversion. Such acts constitute clear examples of religiously motivated crimes. Therefore, the Hindu victim's mother’s statement in this case should not be dismissed outright, particularly in light of existing patterns where Hindu women and minor girls are selectively targeted, exploited, and forcibly converted to Islam by Muslim men. However, in this particular case, it is also essential to consider that the girl in question is an adult. As an adult, she is fully capable of making her own decisions regarding personal relationships and religious beliefs. As a 19-year-old woman, she holds the legal right to choose her partner and adopt a religion of her choosing, provided that all actions are consensual and without duress, deception or coercion. Given her adult status, it is entirely possible that she acted of her own accord, without coercion. The mother’s statement, while important, therefore cannot be taken at face value without any statements from the victim herself. Emotional distress and social stigma could influence the statements of the victim's mother in such scenarios. At Hinduphobia Tracker, we adhere to strict parameters before classifying any incident as a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, considering the girl was an adult and no direct evidence of force or coercion has yet been presented, nor has any statement been made by the girl herself, we are placing this incident in our 'Undecided' database. If any new information emerges in which the victim states that she was forced to convert, we will re-evaluate the case and, if warranted, add it to our hate crime database. Disclaimer: Media reports state that the victim was lured away on April 19, 2025; thus, the date of the incident is selected as April 19, 2025. While media coverage of the incident emerged on August 7, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
