Case Summary

In the Harmo village, Kabirdham district, unidentified individuals damaged the idols in the Sarangarh Shiva Temple. According to temple authorities, the miscreants removed the Shiva Linga from its original place and threw the idol of Lord Shiva into a nearby pond. The idol of Sheshnag was found under a tree outside the temple premises. The following morning, villagers arriving for worship discovered the condition of the idols, and the news spread quickly. Within a short time, the entire village gathered at the temple, along with local leaders from both the BJP and Congress. Given the tense situation, police deployed a heavy security presence at the site. DSP Krishna Kumar Chandrakar and senior officers reached the spot, assuring strict action against the culprits. The temple committee performed purification rituals with Ganga water and collected the damaged idols in one place. They have announced that the idols will be reinstalled on Monday. The committee also emphasised that the temple’s location, being away from the main village, often sees the movement of antisocial elements, and suspected that the act may have been carried out under the influence of alcohol. Political leaders expressed sharp reactions, with local Congress leaders criticising the state government for repeated incidents of temple vandalism and failure to maintain law and order. The temple fair committee called for continuous security at the site until the idols are reinstalled. A police investigation was ongoing to identify and arrest the culprit.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of - Attack on Hindu religious representations. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other sub-category selected is - Attack on temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case constitutes a hate crime against Hindus, the perpetrators directly targeted consecrated murtis central to Hindu worship. In Hinduism, murtis are not merely artistic representations but sacred embodiments of the deity’s divine presence, receiving daily rituals, offerings, and prayers from devotees. The act of removing the Shiva Linga from its established place and throwing it into a pond, and discarding the Sheshnag idol under a tree constitutes an intentional desecration of these revered symbols. Such acts are inherently hostile to Hindu beliefs, as they aim to dishonour and spiritually violate objects that manifest the faith in physical form. This physical and symbolic defilement of sacred icons is driven by animosity towards Hinduism itself, making it a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. Also, in Hindu tradition, the temple is not merely a structure but the dwelling place of the consecrated deity. Any attack on a temple, whether on its murtis or premises, is considered an attack on the faith itself because it strikes at the heart of Hindu religious practice and community life. In this case, the perpetrators violated the sanctity of the temple by desecrating its core sacred elements, creating an atmosphere of spiritual injury and communal distress. This assault on a consecrated Hindu temple—physically damaging its most sacred symbols—clearly qualifies as a religiously motivated hate crime. It is important to mention here that, though the last update was that the miscreants were unknown, regardless, the action stemmed from hatred against Hinduism and resulted in the desecration of idols and would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime.
