This caused anger among the local Hindu community. According to media reports, the accused is identified as a man named Shakeel Qureshi. As soon as news of this incident spread, activists from Hindu organisations informed the police. With the police’s assistance, the secret sale of beef in the bakery was uncovered. The police took Shakeel Qureshi into custody and seized 50 kilograms of beef from his bakery. This caused unrest among the regular Hindu customers of the bakery. Hindu organisations condemned this incident and demanded strict action against the accused. Reports stated that many Hindus purchased pav (bread) from the same shop. The Hindu locals stated that this was an attack on their religious sentiments.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has the potential to be classified as a hate crime because a Muslim man operating a bakery in Belapur village was secretly selling beef in a shop frequented predominantly by Hindu customers. This act can be perceived as a deliberate attempt to offend or harm the religious sentiments of the Hindu community since the cow holds immense importance in Hinduism. It is considered a sacred animal symbolising wealth, strength, motherly love, and selfless giving. Hindus regard the cow as a symbol of non-violence and prosperity; its products, like milk, ghee, and dung, are integral to religious ceremonies and everyday life. Consequently, the consumption of beef is strictly taboo and considered disrespectful and offensive within Hindu society. There is a possibility that the Muslim accused deliberately sold beef in his shop to desecrate and hurt the religious beliefs of Hindus. Such acts are rooted in religious animosity towards Hinduism and its adherents. Even historically, there is precedent for viewing such acts as hate crimes, since beef has been used by Muslim perpetrators as a tool to subjugate and humiliate Hindus. Islamic invaders throughout history have slaughtered cows as a means to subjugate Hindus, forcibly convert them to Islam, force them to eat beef, and throw beef in temples to desecrate their places of worship. Such actions were motivated by immense religious animosity and contempt for Hinduism, its adherents, and their sacred temples. However, despite all this, in this particular case, it is not clearly established whether the bread sold in the bakery was actually contaminated with beef or whether Hindu customers were deceptively fed beef. The facts regarding contamination remain unclear; it is possible that the crime was opportunistic—simply selling beef covertly without specifically targeting or deceiving the Hindu customers by mixing beef into their bread. Due to these uncertainties, this case remains inconclusive regarding the intent of the Muslim perpetrator. Therefore, currently this case is being added to the Undecided Database. If any further details emerge demonstrating a religious motive behind the offence, it will then be included in the hate crime database.
