Case Summary

In Jhajha Bazar, Jamui district, Bihar, Hindu deities were ridiculed and were subjected to derogatory and insulting remarks by a Muslim school teacher named Abdul Moin. The incident came to light when a minor Hindu student named Deepa Kumari informed her parents about the derogatory comments that the Muslim teacher, Abdul Moin, made during his classes. She informed her parents that the accused mocked and ridiculed Hindu gods and goddesses, including Maa Durga and Lord Ganesha. He said, "How can a crooked thing be a god?" and "How can someone with a long trunk be a god?". He equated the spitting of paan (betel leaf) with Hindu worship rituals, drawing a deeply offensive parallel between something considered impure and something sacred. These remarks deeply hurt the sentiments of the minor Hindu students, who stated that the repeated comments were mentally distressing. Thus, on August 2, multiple students, including Radhika Kumari, Shivani Kumari, and Sheetal Kumari, accompanied by their parents, went to the school and launched a protest. Deepa’s mother, Leela Devi, expressed shock and anguish upon such comments and said that they send their children to school to study, not to endure religious humiliation. The teacher was not present at the school during the protest. When contacted by the acting headmaster, Mohammad Shamsuddin Ansari, Abdul Moin admitted to these remarks and issued an apology over the phone. However, the parents were not satisfied with the verbal apology and demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter, as well as strict disciplinary action. As of the date of writing this report, a complaint was filed by the student's parents to the District Education Officer (DEO). A copy of the complaint was also forwarded to the District Magistrate, Munger Commissioner, Regional Education Deputy Director, the State Education Department in Patna, and the Prime Minister’s Office in New Delhi. The education department began a preliminary investigation, and the acting headmaster assured that a formal report would be sent to the concerned authorities for further action.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of - Hate speech against Hindus. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. The other sub-category relevant here is - Predatory Proselytisation. Within it, the sub-category selected here is - Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because Hindu deities were ridiculed and subjected to derogatory and insulting remarks by a Muslim school teacher during his classes. The derogatory comments made against Hindu deities, especially the deities as revered as Lord Ganesha and Maa Durga, were designed to undermine, ridicule and abuse Hindu beliefs and those who practice Hinduism. Hindu deities are central to the Hindu faith, and they are held in high reverence among the Hindu community. Any attempt to mock or insult them stems from religious animosity towards Hinduism. The usage of such language constitutes a direct attack on the religious identity of Hindus and contributes to the growing environment of hostility and intolerance toward the community. Hence, it qualifies as a hate crime targeting Hindus for their faith. Acts like this are considered hate speech because they go beyond the realm of criticism or debates, seeking instead to denigrate a religious group and its revered deities. Instances of denigrating and abusing Hindu deities arise from entrenched religious animosity towards Hindus and their faith. Such actions are often motivated by religious animosity towards Hinduism and are consistent with patterns observed in other documented cases of anti-Hindu hate speech. While the act itself may be individual, it primarily stems from Islam's opposition to polytheism and has historically manifested in hostility toward Hindu practices and symbols and other polytheistic religions, which are seen as idolatrous. This ideological foundation has, in many instances, been used to justify the denigration of Hindu beliefs. It is important to highlight that such speech is not merely offensive but actively seeks to marginalise and dehumanise Hindus based on their religious identity, thereby fulfilling the criteria for hate speech. Hence, this case is added to the hate crime database. It is important to understand that the accused made such comments during his classes, while he was teaching minor students, many of whom were Hindus. Often in such cases, the aim of the hate speech is to brainwash the children into accepting the superiority of Islam and thereby making their future conversion much easier. At such a tender age, children are impressionable, vulnerable, and highly susceptible to manipulation, especially when the message comes from someone in a position of authority, like a teacher. Rather than nurturing their understanding and identity, the accused misused his role to alienate the Hindu children from their ancestral faith. The intent behind this was to make the Hindu students feel inferior about their religion and create a sense of shame or self-rejection. The purpose of such denigration is to make the victim feel that their own religion is unworthy and must be abandoned. This method is based on contempt and ideological hostility toward Hinduism, which qualifies as hate speech and religious humiliation. It is important to note here that all the victims were minors and incapable of providing informed consent or deciphering such conversion attempts. They are incapable of understanding the complex implications of such messaging. It is a well-established fact that children are more susceptible to manipulation since they are still developing emotionally, cognitively, and socially. Their brains are not fully mature, making them more vulnerable. This case demonstrates a calculated strategy of targeting those who are less able to resist or understand the long-term implications of conversion, making it a significant case of religious-motivated hate crime. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the accused made such statements, though it was reported that the parents came to school to protest on August 2, 2025. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on the date when the parents protested in school.
