Hindu woman lured away by Muslim man and his associates; victim’s family fears for her life
Case Summary
In Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was lured away by a Muslim man. The woman’s family stated that her life was at risk and that the accused had previously committed a similar act. According to media reports, the accused, identified as Akbar, ran a public facility centre in Indirapuram, while the Hindu woman worked for a company. Akbar lured the woman and persuaded her to elope with him, after which both of them disappeared. Following this, the family of the Hindu woman and members of Hindu organisations created an uproar, stating that Akbar and his associates had lured the woman away. They demanded that the woman be recovered and the accused be arrested. The police registered a case and began searching for the woman. The victim's father stated that his daughter’s life was in danger. The victim's family explained that Akbar had previously lured their daughter away two months earlier, although she was found afterwards. They said Akbar had not been apprehended at that time, which emboldened him to lure their daughter again. Angry and distressed, the family and members of Hindu organisations held a sit-in protest outside the police station, demanding the prompt arrest of the accused. Since the case involved members of two communities, the police increased their presence at the scene as a precaution, although the situation remained calm. ACP Indirapuram, Abhishek Srivastava, stated that a report had been registered, and the woman was being searched. The ACP also said that further action would be taken based on the statements that he would receive.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the family of a Hindu woman filed a police complaint, stating that their daughter had been lured away by a Muslim man named Akbar. The victim's father expressed deep concern for her safety, emphasising that her life was in danger. The victim's family also explained that a similar incident of Akbar luring the woman away had occurred on a previous occasion, although she was eventually found and brought back that time. It is important to highlight that at Hinduphobia Tracker, we have documented numerous similar incidents in which Hindu women and underage Hindu girls have been lured by Muslim men, coerced into converting to Islam, and subsequently subjected to exploitation or, in some cases, killed. In such cases, the intent behind such actions is a deep-rooted religious bias and animosity against the victims and their Hindu identity. The practice of feigning love and proposing marriage, in these instances, is used as a means to pursue the underlying goal of religious conversion. Such acts constitute clear examples of religiously motivated crimes. Therefore, the Hindu victim's family's statements in this case cannot be dismissed outright, particularly in light of existing patterns where Hindu women and minor girls are selectively targeted, exploited, and forcibly converted to Islam by Muslim men. However, in this particular case, it is also essential to consider that the woman in question is an adult. As an adult, she is fully capable of making her own decisions regarding her personal relationships. She holds the legal right to choose her partner and adopt a religion of her choosing, provided that all actions are consensual and without duress, deception or coercion. Given her adult status, it is entirely possible that she acted of her own accord, without coercion. The family's account, while important, should therefore not be taken at face value without any statements from the victim herself. Emotional distress and social stigma could influence the statements of the victim's family in such scenarios. At Hinduphobia Tracker, we adhere to strict parameters before classifying any incident as a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, considering the woman is an adult and no direct evidence of force or coercion has yet emerged, nor has any statement been made by the woman herself, we are placing this incident in our 'Undecided' database. If any new information comes to light in which the victim states that she was forcibly abducted, exploited, or harmed in any way due to her religious identity, then we will add this case to the hate crime database. Disclaimer: Media reports do not mention the exact number of Akbar's accomplices. Therefore, for the purpose of documentation, we are keeping the perpetrator count as '1', referring to Akbar alone.
