Case Summary

In Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, two Hindu youths named Chandan and Mohit were abducted at gunpoint, assaulted and forced to chant Islamic supremacist slogans like "Islam Zindabad" and "Pakistan Zindabad". They were attacked because they opposed the deceptive online grooming of Hindu girls by Muslim youths. According to reports, both the Hindu youths, residents of the Khalebag Mirzapur area, were kidnapped at gunpoint by Shahabuddin, Anas, Zeeshan, and one other person while they were on their way to attend a friend’s birthday party. The Muslim perpetrators, Shahabuddin, Anas and Zeeshan, had earlier created fake social media profiles under Hindu identities and were targeting local Hindu girls in the village, which resulted in widespread outrage among the villagers, including the victims. A police complaint was filed; however, police called both parties and got them reconciled. It was in retaliation for this complaint that the Muslim perpetrators kidnapped the Hindu youths at gunpoint. The two Hindu youths were brutally assaulted during the kidnapping, stripped naked and forced to chant “Islam Zindabad" and "Pakistan Zindabad", a video of which was recorded during the act. When the victims asked for water, the attackers urinated in a bottle and forced them to drink it. Upon learning about the incident, villagers intervened and rescued the victims. They also managed to capture two of the perpetrators, who were then handed over to the police. As of the date of writing this report, the police have arrested three of the accused—Shahabuddin (son of Aminuddin, resident of Mahri Boukha), Anas (son of Mohammad Kaleem, resident of Tamajpur), and Zeeshan (son of Jaffar Ali, resident of Nazirpura, Kotwali Nagar)—and sent them to jail. A search operation was underway to nab the fourth accused, who was absconding. Following this, investigations also revealed that the Muslim gang created fake social media accounts with Hindu names to create caste fights among Hindus. The accused, Shahabuddin, had created an account on social media under the name Sunny Pratap Singh. Through this, he would spread caste-based hatred among Hindus. He used this account to make casteist comments. He also claimed to be a devotee of Bajrang Bali (Hanuman). RSS district publicity chief Vipin Kumar described the case as serious and wrote to the Chief Minister and administration demanding strict action. According to him, more than 15 young Muslim men were involved in the gang, who tried to spread hatred in society by creating fake IDs with Hindu names.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Attack not resulting in death. Within it, the sub-category selected is: - Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. The other sub-category selected here is: - Attacked for Hindu identity. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. The second primary selected here is: - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected here is: - Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being: - 'Name changed' and 'Pattern of targeting Hindu women'. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The third primary category selected in this case is- Hate Speech against Hindus. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case has been added to the tracker because two Hindu youths were kidnapped, stripped, brutally assaulted, and forced to drink urine by a group of Muslim men. The Hindu youths were targeted and humiliated in this degrading manner simply because they opposed the actions of these Muslim men, who had been deliberately creating fake social media profiles using Hindu names to target Hindu girls. This is not an isolated case; there are numerous instances where Muslim men deliberately conceal their religious identity to initiate and sustain relationships with Hindu women or girls. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing their true identity, Muslim men exploit the Hindu girls' trust and target them under false pretences. This tactic reflects a premeditated strategy to manipulate the victim because of their Hindu identity or religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but is an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. The Hindu youths stood up against this practice and dared to raise their voices, because of which they were brutally attacked and humiliated. They were forced to chant 'Islam Zindabad' and made to drink urine - a calculated act of psychological torture and degradation. This pattern has been seen time and time again, where the Muslim community often resorts to disproportionate violence when there is even a minor opposition to their unethical activities. Even in this case, merely filing a police complaint was perceived as defiance, resulting in such violent and inhumane retaliation. Such actions stem from a supremacist mindset where Muslims tend to view Hindus as inherently inferior or deserving of punishment when they resist or speak out. Here, the violence was not just used as revenge but as a display of dominance rooted in communal hatred, which is why the victims were forced to chant Islam Zindabad. This attack was a statement that anyone who decided to oppose them, especially Hindus, would be met with the same fate. The underlying motive, in this case, is not just personal vendetta or anger but a systemic and ideological contempt for the Hindu identity itself. Therefore, this case has been added to the tracker. In this case, the hostility was intensified even further when Hindu boys were coerced into chanting the slogan “Pakistan Zindabad” (long live Pakistan). This is not merely an insult; it is a direct assault on the religious identity of the Hindu victims. While some may argue that such an act is anti-India and pro-Pakistan, but not necessarily anti-Hindu, compelling Hindus to raise slogans like “Pakistan Zindabad” reveals deep anti-Hindu sentiments. It is vital to recognise that Muslim extremists often harbour a specific animosity towards Hindus and their faith, and frequently view India itself as a Hindu collectivity. The very foundation of the partition of India rested on the belief among Muslims that Islam constituted a distinct nation, incompatible with India, a Hindu collectivity. Many Muslims continue to uphold the concept of transnational unity—the Ummah—which sees all Muslims worldwide as part of a single nation. This ideology often places their loyalty with the broader Muslim community rather than with a Hindu-majority nation-state like India. Thus, the slogan “Pakistan Zindabad” is not only an expression of support for a Muslim collectivity, but also a demonstration of transnational loyalty and anti-Hindu sentiment. Any slogan rooted in such transnational allegiances is, by its nature, an expression against Hindus and the Hindu collectivity. Forcing Hindus to chant it openly exposes the Muslim perpetrators’ animosity towards Hindus. Such acts are clearly aimed at asserting the supremacy of Islam while humiliating the Hindu community, making this a religiously motivated crime. In addition to targeting Hindu girls, the Muslim gang employed fake social media accounts to deliberately sow hatred and division within the Hindu community itself. By making casteist remarks and inciting tensions between different Hindu castes, their objective was to create internal strife and undermine Hindu unity from within. The use of caste-based slurs and calculated provocation is fundamentally anti-Hindu, as it weaponises social divisions with the aim of undermining the fabric of Hindu society. While some might argue that caste-based slurs are targeted at specific castes within the Hindu society rather than the whole Hindu community, such distinctions are irrelevant from the Abrahamic perspective, where religion is the primary marker of identity. For the Muslim perpetrators in this case, it was their animosity towards Hinduism and the Hindu community that motivated these acts. While casteist slurs may seem directed at individual castes, the intent, especially when combined with efforts to incite broader caste conflict between Hindus, reflects overarching hostility towards Hindu identity and faith. This underscores religious animosity as the principal motivation behind the crime, making it an unmistakable case of a religiously motivated hate crime. Given that this incident meets multiple parameters of a religiously motivated crime, it is being added to the hate crime database. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the victim's ordeal began, but it mentions that the accused were arrested on 24th July, 2025. Since this is the earliest date mentioned, we are considering this as when the victim's ordeal began and using this as the incident date. While media coverage of the incident emerged later, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
