Hindu girl in Sultanpur coerced into Islam and Nikah by Muslim man; targeted and brainwashed over 4 years
Case Summary
In Kashiram Colony of Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu girl was lured, brainwashed, and pressured for religious conversion and Nikah by a Muslim youth named Imran Ahmed. The accused abused Hindu deities to induce conversion. According to the complaint filed by the victim's father, the accused used to visit the girl's house on the pretext of work. Gradually, he grew closer to the victim and started pressuring her for religious conversion so as to marry her. He started spreading misinformation about Hindu deities. Over a period of nearly four years, he systematically brainwashed the girl and coerced her into accepting Islam. He changed her name to Sakina and eventually performed Nikah with her, facilitated by a Maulvi. On the day of the incident, when the girl did not return home till evening, her family became concerned and searched for her. She was eventually found with Imran, who declared that the girl had embraced Islam, changed her name, and was now his wife. He also stated that she would not return to her family. The father managed to persuade the girl to return home and immediately approached the police. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against Imran under conversion-related sections and took him into custody. As of the date of writing this report, the investigation was ongoing.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected is: - Forced conversion before marriage, with the tertiary category being: - Forced to do Nikah. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The second sub-category selected here is: - Predatory Proselytisation. Within it, the sub-category selected here is: - Attempting to convert/converting by denigrating Hinduism. In several cases, Hindus are converted or an attempt is made to convert Hindus by denigrating their faith, Hinduism. In such cases, the Hindus associate with the non-Hindu perpetrators often by choice and then, the attempt to convert them by insulting their faith, showing the faith down etc begins. An example of this would be a non-Hindu gathering where the Hindus are attending the gathering of their own free will. However, once they attend the gathering, there is an explicit attempt to convert them by abusing their faith and hailing the faith of the perpetrator. The denigration of the Hindu faith is often based on misrepresentation of the Hindu faith, its doctrine and scriptures and insult to espoused traditions if not blatant lies about Hindu beliefs and ways. Such conversions or attempts at conversions are driven by animosity towards the Hindu faith and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu girl was lured, brainwashed, and pressured for religious conversion and Nikah by a Muslim youth named Imran Ahmed. The accused abused Hindu deities and insulted Hinduism as a way to mentally weaken and coerce the victim into leaving her faith. Such actions reveal a deep-seated religious animosity and contempt towards Hinduism and its adherents. Hindu deities are deeply revered by the Hindu community, and deliberately insulting them to force conversion demonstrates profound hatred and intolerance towards the Hindu faith and its adherents. This further underscores the religiously motivated nature of the crime. The accused converted her to Islam and changed her name as well in an attempt to alienate her from her Hindu identity and cultural roots. This changing of name is symbolic and is often seen in cases of predatory proselytisation, where changing of name results in easier assimilation of the victim into the new faith. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. This belief manifests in practices that seek to erase or overwrite the Hindu identity of the victim through manipulation, inducement, or force. Taken together, the elements of this case, emotional grooming, abuse of Hindu deities, forced religious conversion, name change, and Nikah, constitute a highly structured act of predatory proselytisation. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime. Disclaimer: The victim's father stated that the accused brainwashed her over the course of nearly four years, though no exact date or month is provided. Thus, to document this case, we have used an indicative date— July 25, 2021—as a placeholder to represent the beginning of her suffering. While media coverage of the incident emerged on June 25, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
